◆無冠詞
・I'm afraid of spiders.(普通名詞の複数形・種類全体を表わす)
・I like coffee better than tea.(物質名詞)
・Necessity is the mother of invention.(抽象名詞)
・Eric is my best friend.(固有名詞)
◆普通名詞の単数形で無冠詞の場合
・We go to school five days a week.
・We usually have dinner at seven.
・I came here by bus.
・We elected Miki captain of our team.
◆(原則)修飾語の一番前に置かれる
⇒特別な語順の場合
・Why did you buy such an expensive watch?
・I've never seen so beautiful a night view.
・I know both the brothers well.
◆前置詞+無冠詞の名詞
・by accident(偶然に=by chance)
・in fact(実際は)
・at night[noon](夜[正午]に)
・at home(在宅して)
・on business(商用で)

●less(量・程度が)少ない、(大きさが)より小さい
《用法》
・less は形容詞の前に置いて遠まわしにnotの代わりに用いる事がある。
●a less attractive man(ugly man)醜い男
●less fortune(affluent)people(poor people)貧しい人々
《ことわざ》
★The less said the better.
(口数は少ないほどよい)
*日本の感覚に近い?英語圏でこんなことわざがあるとは。
★He is less tired than sleepy.(彼は疲れているというより眠いのだ)
=He is not so much tired aas sleepy.
=He is more sleepy than tired.
●much less [否定語句の後で]いわんや、ましてなおさら…でない(let alone)
★He can't even read English,much less write it.
(彼は英語を読むことすらできない、まして書くことなどできるものではない)
●beside は左右の、by は前後左右の位置を表す。
★There was no one beside me at the table.
・通例「私のそばに誰もいなかった」を意味するが
文脈によっては「私以外の誰もいなかった」の意味にもなりうる。
