Summary of the Straw Millionaire　わらしべ長者のあらすじ

　A long, long time ago a very poor and unlucky man went to the temple for the last time and prayed to Kan-non sama, the Goddess of Mercy, for good luck. And after many hours of prayer in the temple hall he finally received a prophecy from the Goddess.

　The next morning, just as the Goddess told him, when the man left the temple, he tripped and fell. Then he got up to find a straw in his hand. He caught a horsefly and fastened it to the tip of the straw and followed the road. Down the road, the man met an old woman with a crying baby on her back, who stopped crying when it saw the man’s straw with the horsefly on top of it. So gave it to the baby and the old woman offered him three satsuma tangerines in return. He went a little further and met a young woman suffering from heatstroke. The man offered her all of his tangerines. When she recovered, she thanked him by handing him three rolls of exquisite silk.

　The man went a little further and met a samurai with a dying horse. The samurai forced the man to trade his silk for the horse. Feeling miserable, the man knelt down by the half-dead horse. He kept stroking it, saying a prayer, and then it came back to life. The two came to a castle town. There the man wanted to find food.
　男が少し先へ進むと、侍と死にかけた馬に出会った。侍は男に無理やり、絹と馬を交換させた。男はみじめな気持ちで半死の馬の横にひざまづいた。彼が祈りながら撫で続けていると、それが息を吹き返した。男と馬は城下町へやって来た。男は食べ物を探そうと思った。

　He went to the stable of a huge mansion and asked for hay for the horse. The owner of the house looked at the horse and offered him 2,000 ryo for it. Then it turned out that his daughter was the woman the man helped out on the road. In the end, they got married and people began to call him “the straw millionaire.”
　彼は大きな屋敷の厩へ行くと、馬にやるまぐさをくれるよう頼んだ。家の主はその馬を見て二千両で買うと申し出た。それからそこの娘は男が道中で助けた女であるとわかった。最後に二人は結ばれ、人々は彼を「わらしべ長者」と呼んだ。

※neは、あとに母音始まりの動詞がつづくとエリズィオンします。

▶ 名詞と冠詞
　男性名詞と女性名詞があり、単数と複数の区別も大切
男性名詞 billet [bijɛ] 切符　billets 複数形
女性名詞 clé [kle] 鍵　elés 複数形
☞複数形は語末にsを付ける。このsは発音しません。

　定冠詞 : その、例の（名詞を特定）the
le (l’) + 単数男性名詞 le billet
la (l’) + 単数女性名詞 la clé
des + 複数名詞、それらの les billets、les clés
　不定冠詞：ある1つの（名詞を特定していない）a
un + 単数男性名詞 un billet
une + 単数女性名詞 une clé
des + 複数名詞（いくつかの～）des billets、des clés
☞定冠詞のleとlaはエリズィオンする la église → l’église
　les、desは、あとに母音で始まる語がつづくとリエゾンします。
