Elderly people have three major sleep problems. Of these, the two problems of getting to sleep earlier and getting short spells of sleep can be explained by changes in circadian rhythms due to aging, and by increasing the frequency of getting up for the toilet at night.
However, the underlying problem of compromising the length and quality of deep sleep remains a mystery. Why do people lose this precious sleep when they get older?
This is also a pressing issue for geriatric care. Deep sleep has an important role in controlling learning and memory, and it goes without saying that it is also necessary for general health, from heart disease and respiratory organs, to metabolism, energy balance, and immune function.
