実践ビジネス英語 8/7放送分 Lesson 7 「週4日勤務制」 Four Day Workweek (6)

■ TALK THE TALK
Satoshi Sugita : Our current vignette talks about the potential benefits of a four-day workweek for companies, employees and the economy in general. What would you do with an extra day off every week? Heather.

Heather Howard : Well, I would definitely do some shopping. Lately, I've been talking an interest in interior design. And if I had an extra day off, I would love to spend part of it browsing through used furniture stores and such; try to find some interesting pieces that might look nice in my house. I'd also like to take some classes related to interior design; maybe learn how to refinish furniture and make cushions. Let's see, more time to bake would be nice. Oh, and of course, more time to read. Maybe I could finally make a dent in the big stack of books I've got that are still waiting to be read years and years after I bought them.
▷ make a dent in 〜を減らす

S : Sounds like you'd be on board with the idea. Many employees are said to appreciative when companies shorten working hours without reducing their salaries. It can lead to a more engaged and productive workforce.

H : I think people would be more productive. I've often heard that work shrinks or expands to fit the time we have to do it. There are limits to that philosophy, of course, but my guess is that most people would manage to get their work done even in a shortened workweek. They'd certainly be motivated to do so, and not miss out on their extra day.

S : It also turns out that companies, too, can benefit as they see their profits grow. This doesn't work with every company, though. Some may find it too disruptive in the original sense of the world. Financial problems can force some companies to forgo the practice and return to traditional scheduling. Also, companies that charge clients based on time input may be reluctant to make the move.
▷ forgo ( 楽しみなどを自発的に)諦める、控える、慎む、

H : The vignette mentions how industries like the service industry might have a problem introducing a four-day workweek as customer demands always have to be met. Perhaps, one way to get around that could be staggering peoples' schedules such as; some people working Wednesday through Saturday or Sunday through Wednesday. Others could do Monday through Thursday. That would ensure everyone had at least one weekend day off and keep staff providing whatever service was required.
▷ get around (問題などを)うまく避ける、(障害物を避けて)回り道をする、
▷ stagger (出来事などを重ならないよう)調整する、シフトさせる、

S : Chuck Salmans said too many Americans still see work as an end in itself. Work has become an obsession. He added that people work long hours and strive endlessly in an attempt to boost their sense of self-worth. I think the keyword here is self-worth. It relates to the Japanese concept of Ikigai, which is reason to get up in the morning. Many people would struggle with additional free time. A shorter workweek might be a double-edged sword in society. A famous Spanish painter and sculptor once said, "When I work, I relax. Doing nothing or entertaining visitors makes me tired.". I think he would find many like-minded people in the world.

H : There is something to that. Awhile back, there was a particularly long stretch of consecutive Holidays in Japan. And I saw a few news reporters in which people were quoted as saying that the break felt too long. I guess the challenge is to find a healthy balance. To find work that we are passionate about and do it to a reasonable degree. Easier said than done though when we all have financial obligations and various forms of social pressure bearing down on us.
▷ quoted as saying that 〜ということを、言ったと、伝えられている
▷ bear down on 〜を押さえつける、〜を威圧する、
