Closing the Digital Divide (6)

■ Talk the Talk
Sugita Satoshi : I had an aha moment about the digital divide the other day. I was on the subway reading a newspaper, and looked up to see a teenage boy sitting across from me. He was texting way at a blinding speed. It was clear as day, the digital gap between this teenager and me. I used to boast that I had never seen anyone who could type faster than me - on a manual typewriter. But this teenager may never even have seen a manual typewriter, nor a fax machine nor a coin-operated dial pay phone. Also, he must get his news online, not from a printed newspaper, and use his smartphone as his camera. Everything has become digital for the younger generations.

Aha moment
at a blinding speed
clear as day 明白な、明らかな、

Heather Howard : It certainly has. My daughter will probably never actually call anyone to order a pizza, for example. I remember calling the pizza place and listing off the things I wanted : "Hi, a large pepperoni, please, with extra cheese and two diet sodas." But she'll just place he order through a website or an app.

S S : That reminds me - I recently had my wristwatch overhauled for the first time since I bought ten years ago. I was told it would take two months to get it fully serviced, so I thought maybe I should buy a cheap model to use the interim. But then I realized that most young people today don't even own a wristwatch . They just just check their smartphones for the time. I decided I could get by with my smartphone for a couple of months. But I was very happy to eventually get my watch back.

in the interim その間に、

H H : How the world changes.

■ Listening Challenge
⓵ Which chart sows the correct percentages of the company's accounts receivable?

Here are this year's figures on how quickly our company collects payments owed us. The more quickly we can collect debts, the better we can offer lines of credit to new clients. As you can see here, most of our accounts are receivable within a 30-day period. This is followed by accounts within a 60-day period, at 21 percent, and next by a 90-day period, at six percent. What is notable is the percentage of debts uncollected for more than 90 days, which is double the 60-to-90-day time frame. We need to improve in this area.
→ Answer : C

⓶ Which document has been officially signed?

A : A public offering
B : A stock certificate
C : A merger agreement

F : Do you have any new information on the status of the merger?
M : The board of directors will discuss certain details at its next meeting. I understand some points still haven't been finalized about the public offering of stock by the merged company.
F : I suppose those details will have to be completely laid out in the contract.
M : Actually not. Only a contract agreeing to merge the companies needed to be signed, and that's already been done. The stock offering is a separate matter.
→ Answer C : A merger agreement
