Financial Literacy (6)
■ Talk the talk
Satoshi Sugita : Our current vignette talks about financial literacy and the importance of teaching young people how to properly handle money. As I recall, I got my first such lesson in middle school.
I went to school in Nihonbashi which is a busy commercial district in the heat of Tokyo. Most of my classmates' parents were merchants, as were mine. The boys were mischievous rascals, often coming to school late.
One day our homeroom teacher suddenly announced, "I've often told you to be on time for class, but you never listen to me. So, I've decided to charge you 10 yen every time you're late. You're all the children of merchants, so you equate everything with money."
So from then on, if we wee late, we had to drop a ten-yen coin in a big vase at the front of the class room.

equate ... with ...

Heather Howard : I see. What was the money used for?

S S : To buy snacks actually。After participating in all the events on field day, we gathered in the classroom and ate the snacks together.
Now Heather, do you talk about money with your daughter?

H H : Well, I have started giving her a weekly allowance. And we decorated two glass jars to hold the money. One is for her spending money and the other is for saving.
Every Friday, I hand over her allowance and she takes one coin out of the hole and puts it in her savings jar. Every so often we pull out the saving jar and count up her coins. I make a point of praising her when we do that saying, "Wow, look how much you've got in the jar"!

S S : Has she ever asked to use the money in the saving jar?

H H : No, she hasn't, and sometimes she's even backed off using the money in her spending jar. The basic rule is that she can use the spending jar money however she likes, but once it's used, that's it. She doesn't get any more allowance until the next Friday rolls around. So a few times she announced that she wants to buy something, but then changed her mind after counting out coins from the spending jar, she's looked at the money and said , " I don't want spend too much. Maybe I'll get something later" . I think the allowance n the jars are helping her understand that money is a finite quantity and she has to conserve her resources.

that's it それでおしまい

S S : Did you take any financial literacy courses in high school, Heather?

H H : No, not to speak of. I remember there was a special presentation one day about the kind of expenses we would face in the real world, but it was just a one-time lecture given by a visiting instructor. We all would have benefited from a long program, I'm sure. It would have made me feel much more confident as I prepared to go college. So, I'm glad to hear that this is being required in more states now.
I will definitely keep talking to my daughter about money maters as she grows. I have no problem talking about money. I don't think it's indelicate at all, and I want her well prepared to make her way in the world.

not to speak of 〜は言うまでもなく、
make one's way in the world
