L116 許す①: let
☆let「許す」let+目的語+動詞原形「が～するのを許す・～させる」「手を出さないで放っておく・うっかり～してしまう」といった使い方もある。
・Let me ask you a quick question.
・Just let me check my email.
・Open the door, let me in！
・Let me know when you’ve finished.
・Harry let the cat out of the bag, so now everyone knows our engagement.
☆let the cat out of the bag「（うっかり）秘密を漏らす」
L117 許す②: レベル2動詞 allow, permit
☆allow 「受け入れる・許容する・くれる」letより硬い印象の「許す」
・Allow me to get this.
・We don’t allow smoking here.
・My mother allows me 3,000 yen a month.
・The facts allow no other explanation.
・This machine allows us to make drinking water from air.
☆permit「許可する」とても固く公共機関などで使う「許す」
・You’re not permitted to enter this government building.
L118主張する：レベル２動詞insist, claim, assert
☆insist「（頑固な強い意志の）主張する」譲らない強い主張がイメージされる。
・I insisted that it was the right thing to do.
☆claim「（叫ぶイメージの）主張する・請求する」私は正しい、私に手に入れる権利があると叫んでいる感触。日本語の文句をつけるクレームの意味はない。
・She claimed that she was innocent.
・You should be able to claim expenses for entertaining your foreign clients.
・Passengers on flight 203 from Istanbul may claim their baggage at carousel No.4.
☆assert「（臆せず明瞭にしっかりと）意見を言う」非常に好ましい態度positiveなイメージ。negativeなイメージはない。
・The leadership camp taught me to assert myself more.
L119　要求する：レベル２動詞require、demand
☆require「要求する」必要(need)のイメージ。感情が含まれず理性的・客観的。
・His job requires that he take an international English test.
・Learning a foreign language requires long-term motivation.
・My vintage car requires a lot of TLC.
☆TLC（tender loving care「優しいお世話」）
☆demand「要求する」大きな感情の高揚が感じられる。
・The woman demanded that she be reimbursed.

In my class I don’t allow students to speak Japanese.

Students are not permitted to eat in the library.

17.アルコール飲料の未成年への販売は法律で禁止されています。

The law does not permit the sale of alcohol to minors.　

18.彼女は割り勘にしようと言い張った。

She insisted on going Dutch.

19.その女性は自分が強盗に遭ったと主張した。

The woman claimed that she had been robbed.

20.大変多くの女性が自らの権利を主張しているのを見ると勇気づけられる。

It’s encouraging to see so many women asserting their rights.

21.その古い家には新しい屋根が必要だ。

The old house requires a new roof.

22.すぐに説明してくれ。

I demand an explanation right now!

23.その学校は学生全員が制服を着用することを求めている。

The school requires that all students should wear a uniform.
