L131　思考を表す動詞②: believe
☆believe「信じる」think「思う・考える」が「頭」についての動詞なら、believe は「心」についての動詞。think より深く心の中に根を下ろしている。
・Can you believe this?
・Never say you think we can meet the deadline; say you believe we can meet the deadline.
・I believe Tom. / I believe in Tom.
L132思考を表す動詞③ thinkの「上」と「下」：consider、guess
☆consider「（頭をしっかり回して）考える・熟考する・（色々考えた結果）～と思う・見なす」thinkより「上」深い熟考を重ねるイメージ。
・There’s no hurry. Take time to consider your options.
・I consider it my duty.
・I don’t consider salary to be the top priority when it comes to choosing a job.
☆guess「（確信がなく）推測する・(何となく)思う」thinkより「下」思考過程が感じられない。
・He has no idea who the next captain will be. He’s just guessing.
・John is coming, I guess.
・Guess what!
・Guess who I bumped into at the bookstore yesterday.
L133思考を表す動詞④ 予期する・想像する：expect、imagine
☆expect「（当然こうなるはずだと）予期・期待する」「ex-(外を)spect（見る）」目上から目下へ強い圧力をかける表現。望ましくない場合にも使える。
・I didn't expect rain.
・I expect to arrive at 8 o’clock.
・Do you expect me to agree with everything you say?
・I expect you all to participate actively in class.
・All members are expected to obey the dress code.
☆imagine「（心にイメージを描いて）想像する・察する・わかる」相手に寄り添う温かな使い方もできる。
・I can’t imagine living without you.
・I imagine you must really miss your family.
L134　思考を表す動詞⑤ひとクセある「思う」：suppose、assume
☆suppose「思う・仮に～としたら」「下に置く」が語源、「判断の土台」が感じられる。それほど確信のある表現ではない。
・We are supposed to meet them in twenty minutes.
・He’ll be coming later, I suppose.
・Suppose she left you, what would you do?
☆assume「～が本当だと思う・仮定する」take(受け入れる)のイメージ。
・We can safely assume that Sheila will be elected CEO.
・Let’s assume that we can raise enough money for our startup.
・I assume responsibility for any decision I make.（責任をとる）

Of course I’ve considered the impact moving house will have on our children.

I consider this movie is unsuitable for my kids.

19.なぜメアリーは加われないの？—仕事で手いっぱいなんだろうと思うよ。

Why can’t Mary join us? — I guess she’s tied up at work.

☆tied up「がんじがらめになっている・忙しくて手いっぱい」

20.今年は５％ほど利益が増えそうです。

We expect to increase our profits by around 5％ this year.

22.なぜボスが私と話がしたいか想像できません。

I can't imagine why the boss wants to talk with me.

Aren’t you supposed to be in class right now?

24.離婚率は上がり続けると考えるのが妥当ですね。

It is reasonable to assume that the divorce rate will continue to rise.

☆It is reasonable「理にかなっている・妥当な」

25.いつものつまらないスピーチがあるんだと思う。

There will be the usual boring speeches, I suppose.
