（8） “This,” said I at length, to the old man―”this can be nothing else than the great whirlpool of the Maelström.”
“So it is sometimes termed,” said he. “We Norwegians call it the Moskoe-ström, from the island of Moskoe in the midway.”
　The ordiary accounts of this vortex had by no mean prepared me for what I saw. That of Jonas Ramus, which is perhaps the most circumstantial of any, cannot impart the faintest conception either of the magnificence, or of the horror of the scene―or of the wild bewildering sense of the novel which confounds the beholder. I am not sure from what point of view the writer in question surveyed it, nor at what time; but it could neither have been from the summit of Helseggen, nor during a storm. There are some passages of his description, nevertheless, which may be quoted for their details, although their effect is exceedingly feeble in conveying an impression of the spectacle.

　この渦巻についての普通の記述は、いま眼の前に見たこの光景にたいして、少しも私に前もって覚悟させてくれなかった。ヨナス・ラムスの記述はおそらくどれよりもいちばん詳しいものではあろうが、この光景の雄大さ、あるいは恐ろしさ――あるいは見る者の度胆を抜くこの奇観の心を奪うような感じ――のちょっとした概念をも伝えることができない。私はこの著者がどんな地点から、またどんな時刻に、この渦巻を見たのかは知らない。が、それはヘルゼッゲンの頂上からでもなく、また嵐の吹いているあいだでもなかったにちがいない。しかし彼の記述のなかには、その光景の印象を伝えるにはたいへん効果は弱いが、その詳しい点で引用してもよい数節がある。
