　“It is now within a few days of three years since what I am going to tell you occurred. 　私ども三人――二人の兄弟と私――は、午後の二時ごろ例の島の方へ渡って、間もなく見事な魚をほとんど船いっぱいに積みましたが、その日はそれまでに一度もなかったほど、たくさんとれたと三人とも話し合いました。いよいよ錨を揚げて帰りかけたのは、私の時計でちょうど七時。ストロムでいちばんの難所を滞潮(よどみ)のときに通りぬけようというのです。それは八時だということが私どもにはわかっているのでした。
