▶週末の予定を相談しているユウダイ(Y)とダイキ(D)の会話。
Y: What time do you want to meet tomorrow?
D: How about three o’clock?
Y: OK. Where do you want to meet?
D: Why don’t you come to my house?
　　You can bring some snacks from the supermarket.
Y: Where is the supermarket?
D: It’s just behind my house. There are a few shops there.
　　A convenience store, a drugstore, shops like that.
Y: If the shops are so close, why don’t you go?
D: I’ll probably feel sleepy after my lunch. And maybe it will be raining.
Y: Daiki! Don’t be lazy!
D: OK, Yudai. Why don’t we go together?
Y: I agree.

▶兄のパトリック(P)と妹のモリー(M)のカフェでの会話。
P: So, it’s good that you dumped Jordan.
M: Yeah, he was always checking out cute girls when I was with him.
P: That’s not good. What’s your new boyfriend like?
M: He is kind and handsome. And what’s more, he enjoys the same sports as I do.
P: Oh, is he a good tennis player?
M: He’s not that good. I almost always beat him.
P: Maybe he lets you win to be kind.
M: No way! He’s very competitive.
P: Just like you!
　　・dump　(恋人を)ふる、(不要なものを)捨てる
　　・competitive　競争心が強い

〇Key Sentence
　　He is kind and handsome. And what’s more, he enjoys the same sports as I do.
　　彼は優しいし、ハンサムです。それだけでなく、私と同じスポーツをしているのです。
　★「さらに、その上」のフレーズ
・what’s more …とどめの一撃を加える勢いで使われる。
　　　・on the top of that …topのうえに「さらに」の感じ。
　　　・besides …論点と角度の違った理由を加えるときに使われる。
　　① My new job is interesting and stimulating.
What’s more, the salary is much higher!
今度の仕事は面白くて刺激があるよ。その上、給料がはるかに高いんだ。
　　② His wallet was stolen, and he caught the stomach flu.
　　　 On the top of that, he missed his flight home!
　　　彼は財布を盗まれて、胃腸かぜにもなった。
その上、帰りの飛行機にも乗り遅れたんだ。
　　③ I don’t want to go hiking. It’s boring. Besides heavy rain is forecast.
　　　ハイキングには行きたくない。つまらないんだ。それに予報では大雨だよ。

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway　“The Old Man and the Sea”　(79)

　The old man unhooked the fish, re-baited the line with another sardine and tossed it over. Then he worked his way slowly back to the bow. He washed his left hand and wiped it on his trousers. Then he shifted the heavy line from his right hand to hie left hand and washed his right hand in the sea while he watched the sun go into the ocean and the slant of the big cord.
　“He doesn’t change at all,” he said. But watching the movement of the water against his hand he noted that it was perceptibly slower.
　“I’ll lash the two oars together across the stern and that will slow him in the night,” he said. “he’s good for the night and so am I.”
　It would be better to gut the dolphin a little later to save the blood in the meat, he thought. I can do that a little later and lash the oars to make a drag at the same time. I had better keep the fish quiet now and not disturb him too much at sunset. The setting of the sun is a different time for all fish.

老人は鉤から魚を外し、別のイワシをつけて海へ放り込んだ。そして舳先のほうへゆっくり戻った。左手を洗って、ズボンで拭く。それから、重いロープを右手から左へ移し、海で右手を洗った。彼は、海に沈んでいく太陽と、長いロープの傾きとを眺めていた。
「奴は全く変わらないな」彼は言った。しかし、水に入れた手の感覚からは、明らかに速度が落ちていることが分かった。
「オールを二本、船尾に縛りつけておこう。そうすれば、夜の間に奴の速度を落とせるはずだ」彼は言った。「奴は夜に強い。俺と同じだ」
　シイラの腸は、少し経ってから抜いたほうがいいな。そうすれば肉の中に血を保っておける。彼は考えた。少ししたらそれをやろう。オールを縛って足枷にするのも、その時にやる。今は手を出さないでおいて、日暮れ時に奴を刺激しないようにするんだ。日の沈む時間は、どんな魚でも扱いが難しい。
