(Ex.1)　友人にペットを買いに行くと言って出かけたが、結局きれいな石を買ってきたことを話す。
　Friend: How did you shopping go?
　You: 「私が買ってきたこの石を見て。ぴかぴかで美しいでしょう。
　　　その上絶対死なないんです。」
　　・ぴかぴか shiny

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway　“The Old Man and the Sea”　(81)
　
　It was dark now as it becomes dark quickly after the sun sets in September. He lay against the worn wood of the bow and rested all that he could. The first stars were out. He did not know the name. He did not know the name of Rigel but he saw it and knew soon they would all be out and he would have all his distant friend.
“The fish is my friend too,” he said aloud. “I have never seen or heard of such a fish. But I must kill him. I am glad we do not have to try to kill the stars.”
Imagine if each day a man must try to kill the moon, he thought. The moon runs away. But imagine if a man each day should have to try to kill the sun? We were born lucky, he thought.
Then he was sorry for the great fish that had nothing to eat and his determination to kill him never relaxed in his sorrow for him. How many people will he feed, he thought. But are they worthy to eat him? No, of course not. There is no one worthy of eating him from the manner of his behaviour and his great dignity.
I do not understand these things, he thought. But it is good that we do not have to try to kill the sun or the moon or the stars. It is enough to live on the sea and kill our true brothers.

　もう暗かった。九月は太陽が沈むとすぐに暗くなる。彼は舳先のぼろぼろの板にもたれて、できるだけ楽に休んだ。空には星が出始めていた。彼は星の名を知らなかったが、オリオン座のリゲルを見つけ、じきに他の星たちもみな出てくるだろうと分かった。星々は、遠いところにいる友人たちだ。
　「奴も仲間だ」彼は声に出して言った。「あんな魚、見たことも聞いたこともない。だが俺は奴を殺す。幸い、星を殺さなければいけないわけじゃない」
　人間が毎日、月を殺そうとしなければならないとしたら。彼は考えた。月は逃げていく。太陽を殺さなければいけないとしたら？　そう考えると、俺たち漁師は幸運だな。
　彼は、何も食べていない魚を気の毒に思った。しかしその哀れみの中でも、魚を殺すという決意が揺るぐことはなかった。奴の肉は、どれだけの人間の食料になるだろう。彼は考えた。しかし、奴を食うだけの価値がある人間はいるのだろうか。いない。無論、いない。あのふるまい、あの立派な尊厳を誇る奴を、食う価値のある奴など一人もいない。
　本当にそうかは分からん。彼は思った。だが、太陽や月や星を狙わなくて済むのはありがたいことだ。海に生きて、本当の兄弟を殺す。それで十分だ。

　すると、食うもののない大魚が、なんだか可愛そうに思えてきた。が、殺そうという決意は、けっして憐憫の情にうち負かされはしなかった。



◎Photo: 昨日は出勤日ではなかったので、しなければならない地区役員関係の外回りを済ませた。その後、久々に寄ってみようと思い立ち、３ヶ月ぶりにTX守谷駅ガード下のカフェTullysに行った。引きこもりの生活意識から以前の行動意識に戻していこうと一歩を踏み始めた。
