F: Hi, Kazuko! I just called to touch base. How’s everything?
K: Fine!
F: How do the kids like their new school?
K: School is in full swing now and they’re both adjusting very well, considering.

K: Dad? You’re breaking up.
F: I can hear you.
K: Hang on. I’m going to put you on speaker.
　　・touch base　連絡を取る、様子を見る　(野球で走者がベースにタッチすることから)
　　・How does A like B？　AはBをどう思っていますか？
　　・adjust　順応する
　　・～，considering.　～です、状況を考えれば・状況の割りには。

◎Dialog 2　The Front-Runner　最有力候補
▶カズコ(K)は父(F)に、子どもたちの新しい学校の様子を伝える。
K: Sachi joined the drama club.
F: Wow. How does she like it?
K: She’s getting a kick out of it.
She’s the front-runner for the lead in a school musical!
F: Isn’t that something!　(それはすごいじゃないですか！)
K: And George made the wrestling team!
F: That’s a great sport! I did that in high school.
K: That’s what I told him!　(そう教えておいたわ！)

　　・get a kick out of …　…に熱中する、…を大いに楽しむ

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway　“The Old Man and the Sea”　(82)

　Now, he thought, I must think about the drag. It has its perils and its merits. I may lose so much line that I will lose him, if he makes his effort and the drag made by the oars is in place and the boat loses all her lightness. Her lightness prolongs both our suffering but it is my safety since he has great speed that he has never yet employed. No matter what passes I must gut the dolphin so he does not spoil and eat some of him to be strong.
　Now I will rest an hour and feel that he is solid and steady before I move back to the stern to do the work and make the decision. In the meantime I can see how he acts and if he shows any changes. The oars are a good trick; but it has reached the time to play for safety! He is much fish still and I saw that the hook was in the corner of his mouth and he has kept his mouth tight shut. The punishment of the hook is nothing. The punishment of hunger, and that he is against something that he does not comprehend, is everything. Rest now, old man, and let him work until your next duty comes.

彼は考えた。今は、オールを船の足枷にすることを考えなければ。リスクはあるが利点もある。もしも奴が頑張ろうとして、オールの足枷がうまく働いて、船が軽快さを失ったとしたらどうだ。ロープを出し切って、奴を逃がすかもしれない。船が軽快であれば、双方とも苦しみが長引く。だがそちらのほうが安全だ。奴はまだ全力のスピードを出していないんだからな。どうなるにしても、シイラが悪くならないように腸(わた)抜きをして、多少は腹に入れておくんだ。力をつけるために。
　もう一時間休んで、奴がしっかり落ち着いてるのを確認してから、仕事をしに船尾に戻ろう。そして決断をしよう。それまでに、奴がどう動くか、どう変化するかを見極める。オールを使うのはいい手だ。だが、いまや安全のほうを考える時かもしれん。奴は大した魚だ。鉤は口の端に引っかかっていたが、堅く口を閉じたままだった。鉤など苦痛じゃないんだ。空腹の苦痛と、自分が何と戦ってるのか分からない苦痛、これが全てだ。爺さん、今は休め。次の仕事の時までは、奴に働かせておこう。
