▶校内テストの合格発表について話しているワカナ(W)とシンタロウ(S)。
W: Shintaro! Did you see the test results?
S: Yes, I saw them before the first class. I passed!
W: Congratulations! Did you see my grade?
S: I didn’t check yours. I thought you would want to check it yourself.
W: Thank you. I wonder if I passed the test…
S: Then, let’s go and look.
W: Those are our grade! I’m so worried. I can’t look…
S: You can do it, Wakana. Just look.
W: OK… I will.
S: So… are you OK? How are you feeling? Happy? Sad? Angry?
W: I’m… so happy! I did it! I passed! I thought I failed.

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway　“The Old Man and the Sea”　(86)

　“He is tiring or he is resting,” the old man said. “Now let me get through the eating of this dolphin and get some rest and a little sleep.”
　Under the stars and with the night colder all the time he ate half of one of the dolphin fillets and one of the flying fish, gutted and with its head cut off.
　“What an excellent fish dolphin is to eat cooked,” he said. “And what a miserable fish raw. I will never go in a boat again without salt or limes.”
　If I had brains I would have splashed water on the bow all day and drying, it would have made salt, he thought. But then I did not hook the dolphin until almost sunset. Still it was a lack of preparation. But I have chewed it all well and I am not nauseated,
　The sky was clouding over to the east and one after another stars he knew were gone. It looked now as though he were moving into a great canyon of clouds and the wind had dropped.
　“There will be bad weather in three of four days,” he said. “But not tonight and not tomorrow. Rig now to get some sleep, old man, while the fish is calm and steady.”

　「奴は疲れているのか、それとも休んでいるのか」老人は言った。「俺もシイラを食って、ひと休みして少し眠ろう」
　星空の下、深まってゆく夜の冷え込みの中で、彼はシイラの切り身を半分食べた。それから、腸抜きをして頭を切り落としたトビウオを、一匹だけ食べた。
「料理して食う分には、シイラは最高の魚だ」彼は言った。「だが生では最低だ。次からは必ず、塩かライムを用意することにしよう」
　もう少し知恵があれば、昼の間に舳先に水をまいて乾かして、塩が取れたところだ。彼は思った。ただ、シイラが釣れたのはほとんど日が暮れてしまった頃だったな。それにしたって準備不足だ。しかし、しっかり噛んで食べたし、吐き気があるわけでもない。
　東の空が曇り始めた。知っている星が、一つ、また一つと消えていく。雲でできた大峡谷に船が突っ込んでいくかのようだった。風はやんでいた。
　「三日か四日したら、天気が悪くなりそうだ」彼は言った。「だが今日明日の問題じゃない。魚が落ち着いてるうちに、爺さんは寝る支度だ」



◎Photo:　昨日はある板金屋に車のキズの修理にいったが、修理を待つ間、近くのファミレスに入った。お昼は自宅で済ませてきたが、長時間ここにいることになるので、冷やし麺をドリンクバー付きで注文した。ふだんファミレスは入らないので何とも言えないが、かなり席は空いていた。コロナの影響は少しは持ち直してきているのだろうか。
