Ⅰ．基礎英語３　Lesson 49　Goodbye to my old elementary school
▶Reading
I recently walked past my old elementary school. I was shocked. The school building was half gone. Workers were taking down the walls. I could see inside my old classroom from the street. I felt sad to the building like that.
I have a lot of happy memories from that school. One of my memories was with my best friend, Wayne. We would imagine stories about them. We would think about where they were going and what they were doing.
Sometimes, there was a van which was parked outside the school. We wondered if the driver was a spy or a robber. We still talk about it sometimes now. The mystery of the yellow van was a really exciting adventure. Actually, I think it was just a delivery van!

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway　 “The Old Man and the Sea”　(87)

　He held the line tight in his right hand and then pushed his thigh against his right hand as he learned all his weight against the wood of the bow. Then he passed the line a little lower on his shoulders and braced his left hand on it.
　My right hand can hold it as long as it is braced, he thought. If it relaxes in sleep my left hand will wake me as the line goes out. It is hard on the right hand. But he is used to punishment. Even if I sleep twenty minutes or half an hour it is good. He lay forward cramping himself against the line with all of his body, putting all his weight on his right hand, and he was asleep.
　He did not dream of the lions but instead of a vast school of porpoises that stretched for eight or ten miles and it was in the time of their mating and they would leap high into the air and return into the same hole they had made in the water when they leaped.
　Then he dreamed that he was in the village on his bed and there was a norther and he was very cold and his right arm was asleep because his head had rested on it instead of a pillow.

　こうしておけば俺の右手が押さえていられる。彼はそう考えた。もし眠っていて右手が緩んでも、ロープが動けば左手が気づくはずだ。右手には苦労をかける。だがこいつは酷使されることに慣れてるからな。二十分でも三十分でも眠れればありがたい。彼は上体を前に倒して体重を右手の上に乗せ、自分の体でロープを押さえた。そして彼は眠った。
　夢に出てきたのはライオンではなく、イルカの大群だった。交尾期のイルカの群れが、八マイルか十マイルほども広がっていた。イルカたちは高く跳ね、水面にできた穴にまた潜っていった。
　次の夢では、彼は村にいて、自分のベッドに寝ていた。強い北風が吹いてとても寒く、枕代わりにしている右腕がしびれていた。
