Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway　“The Old Man and the Sea”　（88）

　After that he began to dream of the long yellow beach and he saw the first of the lions come down onto it in the early dark and then the other lions came and he rested his chin on the wood of the bows where the ship lay anchored with the evening off-shore breeze and he waited to see if there would be more lions and he was happy.
　The moon had been up for a long time but he slept on and the fish pulled on steadily and the boat moved into the tunnel of clouds.
　He woke with the jerk of his right fist coming up against his face and the line burning out through his right hand. He had no feeling of his left hand but he braked all he could with his right and the line rushed out. Finally his left hand found the line and he leaned back the line and now it burned his back and his left hand, and hie left hand was taking all the strain and cutting badly. He looked back at the coils of line and they were feeding smoothly. Just then the fish jumped making a great bursting of the ocean and then a heavy fall. Then he jumped again and again and the boat was going fast although line was still racing out ant the old man was raising the strain to breaking point and raising it to breaking point again and again. He had been pulled down tight onto the bow and his face was in the cut slice of dolphin and he could not move.

その後の夢には、黄色く広い砂浜が出てきた。夜明けの暗い浜に、一匹目のライオンが下りてくる。他のライオンたちもそれに続く。彼は舳先に顎を乗せて見ていた。船は晩の陸風の中で停泊している。彼は幸せな気分で、ライオンがもっと現れるのではないかと待っていた。
　月が出てからしばらく経ったが、老人は眠り続けていた。魚は変わらず引き続け、船は雲のトンネルの中に入っていった。
　右の拳が引っ張られて顔にぶち当たり、彼は目覚めた。ロープは右手を焼く勢いで走り出る。左手は何も感じていない。右手に全力を込めてロープを止めようとしたが、勢いは抑えられない。やっと左手がロープをつかむ。体重を後ろにかけると、今度はロープが背中と左手を焼く。引っ張る力の全てがかかり、左手をひどく切ってしまった。振り返って見ると、巻いてあるロープがするすると流れ出ている。その時、魚が水面を爆発させるように飛び上がり、また派手に落下した。魚は何度もジャンプを繰り返す。ロープが走り出ていく。老人は、切れる寸前までロープを押さえ、いったん緩めてはまた切れる寸前まで押さえる。それでも船は勢いよく引きずられる。彼は舳先に引き倒され、顔はシイラの切り身に押し付けられていた。しかし、動くこともできなかった。


◎Photo:　一昨日勤めの帰りに寄ったイオンモールのTurrysにて。客の入りは戻ってきてるようだが、席は1つおきに座ることになっていた。おかげで隣のテーブルも使えて学習しやすかった。
