◎Dialog 3　I’m Rooting for Him　彼を応援しているよ
▶カズコ(K)は父(F)に、息子ジョージがでるレスリングの試合の話をする。
K: George’s first match is on Saturday.
F: What weight class is he in?
K: 130. He thinks the odds are against him.
F: Why is that?
K: He’s going to be wrestling last year’s state champion.
F: He’s got a fighting chance. He’s strong boy for his age.
K: You’re right.
F: Tell him I’m rooting for him.
K: I will.
　　・root for …　…を応援する
　　・The odds are against …　…にとって分が悪い・不利だ
　　・state champion　州チャンピオン
　　・have got a fighting chance　頑張れば(勝つ)チャンスはある
　　・for one’s age　年齢の割に

◎Dialog 4　On the Homestretch　最終段階に入って
▶カズコ(K)に父(F)は、引っ越しのあとの様子について尋ねる。
F: Are you settled in now?
K: Just about. We’re on the homestretch. Hold on.
　　I’ve got another call coming in. (pause) I’m back.
F: When can I come visit?
K: As soon as we unpack the boxes in the guest room.
F: I don’t mind.
K: Then why don’t you drive down this weekend?
F: Great! (pause) Hello? Hello?

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway 　“The Old Man and the Sea”　（89）

　This is what we waited for, he thought. So now let us take it.
　Make him pay for the line, he thought. Make him pay for it.
　He could not see the fish’s jumps but only heard the breaking of the ocean and the heavy splash as he fell. The speed of the line was cutting his hands badly but he had always known this would happen and he tried to keep the cutting across the calloused parts and not let the line slip into the palm or cut the fingers.
　If the boy was here he would wet the coils of line, he thought. Yes. If the boy were here. If the boy were here.
　The line went out and out and out but it was slowing now and he was making the fish earn each inch of it. Now he got his head up from the wood and out of the slice of fish that his cheek had crushed. Then he was on his knees and then he rose slowly to his feet. He was ceding line but more slowly all the time. He worked back to where he could feel with his foot the coils of line that he could not see. There was plenty of line still and now the fish had to pull the friction of all that new line through the water.

　お互い、この時を待っていたんだ。彼は思った。やってやろうじゃないか。
　ロープは弁償してもらうぞ、必ずな。
　彼には魚が跳ねる姿は見えない。海面が破裂する音と、派手に飛び込む音が聞こえるだけだ。ロープのスピードが両手をひどく傷つけていたが、こんなことは普段から想定している。彼はロープの力を皮膚の硬い部分で受け、それが手のひらに滑り込んだり指を切ったりしないよう努めた。
　あの子がここにいたら、ロープを濡らしておいてくれるだろう。彼は思った。そうだ、あの子がいたら。あの子がいてくれたら。
　ロープはみるみる出て行く。が、その勢いは弱まってきた。彼は、魚に一インチずつロープを引き出させてやった。彼は板から頭を上げ、頬で押し潰していたシイラの切り身から顔を離した。膝をつき、そしてゆっくりと立ち上がる。ロープは持って行かれるが、そのスピードはだんだん落ちている。彼は、巻いたロープが控えているところまで後ずさりし、目で見る代わりに足で触って確認した。ロープはまだたっぷりある。新たに伸びたロープが水の中で得る抵抗は、全て魚の重荷になるだろう。
