▶ベンの家でのバーベキューに行くことになったマックス(M)とフレディ(F)の会話。
M: Shall we go to Ben’s barbecue?
F: Sure, let’s go! Where is it?
M: It’s at Ben’s house.
F: Oh, great. So, where is Ben’s house?
M: What? I don’t know. I thought you knew!
F: It’s OK. I know his address, so we can find it online.
M: It must be around here somewhere…
　　The map shows a park opposite his house.
　　The park has tennis and basketball courts.
F: That should be easy to find. Is it on the left or right?
M: Which do you mean, the park or Ben’s house?
F: Ben’s house! But, I think we just passed the park which you described…

S: Tom? He joined our shogi club last month. He’s a really good player.
M: I know, but now I have a problem with him.
　　You see, he told me he loved me.
S: What? Why is that a problem? And why are you telling me?
M: Well, I’m not sure what I should do.
　　I’m not interested in him in that way.
S: No wonder he is always asking me questions about you.

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway 　“The Old Man and the Sea”　(92)

　It was there, cleaned and ready, and he picked it up with his left hand and ate it chewing the bones carefully and eating all of it down to the tail.
　It has more nourishment than almost any fish, he thought. At least the kind of strength that I need. Now I have done what I can, he thought. Let him begin to circle and let the fight come.
　The sun was rising for the third time since he had put to sea when the fish started to circle.
　He could not see by the slant of the line that the fish was circling. It was too early for that. He just felt a faint slackening of the pressure of the line and he commenced to pull on it gently with his right hand. It tightened, as always, but just when he reached the point where it would break, line began to come in. he slipped his shoulders and head from under the line and began to pull in line steadily and gently. He used both of his hands in a swinging motion and tried to do the pulling as much as he could with his body and his legs. His old legs and shoulders pivoted with the swinging of the pulling.
　“It is a very big circle,” he said. “But he is circling.”

　トビウオはちゃんと洗ってあった。彼は左手でつまんで口に入れ、しっかりと骨を噛んで、尻尾まで丸ごと食べた。
　こんなに栄養のある魚はそうはいない。彼は思った。少なくとも、俺に必要な力を持った魚だ。さあ、できることはやったぞ。彼は思った。周回を始めるがいい。そうしたら闘いだ。
　老人が海に出てから三度目の日の出を迎えた頃、魚の軌跡が円を描き始めた。
　ロープの傾きからは、周回しているとは思えなかった。回るのはまだ早すぎる。ロープの引きがわずかに緩むのを感じ、彼は右手で静かに引き始めた。ロープはやはり強く張っていたが、切れる寸前まで張り詰めたと思うと、徐々に手繰れるようになった。彼は両手を左右に振り、体と脚も使って、できる限り引こうとした。老いた脚と肩が、その往復運動の軸になっていた。
「ずいぶん大きな円だな」老人は言った。「だが確かに回っている」
