▶遊園地にやってきたリク(Ri)とライカ(Ry)の会話。
Ri: This is brilliant! Look at that, Ryca! Is that section new?
Ry: Yes, Riku. It is new! Finally, they have finished making it.
Ri: Have you seen the new roller coaster yet? People say it’s really scary.
Ry: Yes, I’ve seen it on the park’s website. It does look quite frightening.
　　 But we have to try it! I7ve tried almost everything here.
Ri: How many times have you been here, Ryca?
Ry: I have visited this place many times over fifteen years.
Ri: Why do you like it here so much?
Ry: I know the park so well. It feel like home.
Ri: Welcome home! Let’s ride the new roller coaster!

G:　OK, everyone. Please come back to the bus at 11:15.
T: I’ve always wanted to see a Japanese convenience store.
　　What are these triangle-shaped things?
G: Those are called onigiri, or rice balls.
T: Oh, I’ve never tried them.
G: Actually, they’re delicious. You have your choice of salmon, pickled plum or tuna salad.
T: I’ll get the tuna salad.
G: Good choice. That’s my favorite too.
T: How do you open it?
G: It’s a bit tricky, so I’ll show you how later.

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway 　“The Old Man and the Sea” (93)

　Then the line would not come in any more and he held it until he saw the drops jumping from it in the sun. Then it started out and the old man knelt down and let it go grudgingly back into the dark water.
　“He is making the far part of his circle now,” he said. I must hold all I can, he thought. The strain will shorten his circle each time. Perhaps in an hour I will see him. Now I must convince him and then I must kill him.
　But the fish kept on circling slowly and the old man was wet with sweat and tired deep into his bones two hours later. But the circles were much shorter now and from the way the line slanted he could tell the fish had risen steadily while he swam.
　For an hour the old man had been seeing black spots before his eyes and the sweat salted his eyes and salted the cut under his eye and on his forehead. He was not afraid of the black spots. They were normal at the tension that he was pulling on the line. Twice, though, he had faint and dizzy and that had worried him.
　“I could not fail my self and die on a fish like this,” he said. “Now that I have him coming so beautifully, God help me endure. I’ll say a hundred Our Fathers and a hundred Hail Marys. But I cannot say them now.”

　ロープは少しも引けなくなった。そのまま握っていると、日差しの中でロープから水滴が跳ねるのが見えた。今度は、ロープが出て行き始めた。老人は膝をつき、暗い水の中へとロープが引き込まれていくのを惜しんだ。
「円の一番遠いところに差し掛かったようだ」老人は言った。できる限り引いていよう、と彼は思った。引いていれば、円はだんだん小さくなる。一時間後には奴の姿が見えるだろう。そして思い知らせてやる。俺が奴を殺すんだ。
　だが、魚はゆっくりと円を描き続けた。二時間後には、老人は汗でびしょ濡れになり、すっかり疲れ切っていた。しかし円はずいぶん小さくなっていたし、ロープの傾きからすると魚が少しずつ浮上してきているのも確かだった。
　一時間前から、老人の眼前には黒い斑点が浮かんでいた。汗の塩分が目に入り、まぶたや額の傷にも沁みる。彼は視界の斑点など恐れてはいなかった。ロープを引く時の緊張にはつきものだからだ。しかし、眩暈を覚えふらついたことが既に二度あった。こちらは気がかりだ。
「あの魚を前に、弱気になって死ぬわけにはいかない」彼は言った。「ここまで立派に引っ張ったんだ、神様の助けがあってもいいじゃないか。『主の祈り』を百回、『アヴェ・マリア』を百回でも唱えよう。だが今すぐは無理だ」
　唱えたということにしよう、と彼は考えた。後でちゃんとやればいい。
