Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway “The Old Man and the Sea” (95)

　He kneeled against the bow and, for a moment, slipped the line over his back again. I’ll rest now while the goes out on the circle and then stand up and work on him when he comes in, he decided.
　It was a great temptation to rest in the bow and let the fish make one circle by himself without recovering any lien. But when the strain showed the fish had turned to come toward the boat, the old man rose to his feet and started the pivoting and the weaving pulling that brought in all the line he gained.
　I’m tired than I have ever been, he thought, and now the trad wind is rising. But that will be good to take him in with. I need that badly.
　“I’ll rest on the next turn as he goes out,” he said. “I feel much better. Then in two or three turns more I will have him.”
　His straw hat was far on the back of his head and he sank down into the bow with the pull of the line as he felt the fish turn.
　You work now, fish, he thought. I’ll take you at the turn.
　The sea had risen considerably. But it was a fairweather breeze and he had to have it to get home.

彼は舳先に膝をつき、いったん、先ほどと同様に背中にロープを回した。奴が円を描いて遠ざかっていくうちは、俺は休んでおこう。そして近づいてきた時には、立ち上がっていよいよ仕事だ。彼はそう決めた。
　魚には勝手に周回させておき、ロープを引くこともなしに、舳先で休んでいたい。それはとても魅力的な誘惑だった。しかし、魚が大きく回って船に近づいてきていることをロープが示すと、老人は立ち上がった。体を軸として、機織(はたおり)のようにロープを引き始める。彼はロープを手繰れるだけ手繰った。
　今までこれほど疲れたことはなかった。彼はそう思った。貿易風が吹いてきたぞ。奴を連れて帰るには都合がいい。ぜひとも必要な風だ。
「奴がまた遠ざかり始めたら、休むんだ」彼は言った。「気分はずいぶん良くなった。あと二周か三周したら、こちらの勝ちだ」
　老人の麦わら帽子は、頭の後ろのほうへずり落ちていた。魚がまた方向を変え、ロープの引きが変わると、彼は舳先に座り込んでしまった。
　魚よ、せいぜい頑張りな。彼は思った。また近づいてきた時に仕留めてやる。
　ずいぶん波が立ってきた。しかし、この晴天の風は、陸に帰るために無くてはならない風だった。
