◎Dialog 5　Choose Sides　誰かの味方をする
▶カズコ(K)は父(F)に職場での問題を相談する。
K: Hello? I think we got cut off.
F: I’m here.
K: Let me take you off speaker. I wanted to tell you something.
F: Yes?
K: My new job is really stressful. I want to quit.
F: Don’t jump the gun.
K: My team members are complaining to me about each other in private.
F: Oh.
K: I feel I can’t choose sides.

　　・get cut off　(主語の電話中に)切れてしまう
　　・take … off speaker　…を(通話中の)スピーカー(フォン)から外す

◎Dialog 6　Play Hardball　手加減を一切しない
▶カズコ(K)は職場の自分のチームの状況について父(F)に話す。
K: There are no team players in this company.
F: That’s a big change from your last job.
K: Yes! I didn’t realize what I was getting into. Everyone wants to play hardball.
F:　Get it time. You’re only been there a month.
K: I know but we need to get down to business.
　　All this infighting is preventing us from hitting our targets.

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway “The Old Man and the Sea” (96)

　“I’ll just steer south and west,” he said. “A man is never lost at sea and it is a long island.”
　It was on the third turn that he saw the fish first.
　He saw him first as a dark shadow that took so long to pass under the boat that he could not believe its length.
　“No,” he said. “He can’t be that big.”
　But he was that big and at the end of this circle he came to the surface only thirty yards away and the man saw his tail out of water. It was higher than a big scythe blade and a very pale lavender above the dark blue water. It raked back and as the fish swam just below the surface the old man could see his huge bulk and the purple stripes that banded him. His dorsal fin was down and his huge pectorals were spread wide.
　On this circle the old man could see the fish’s eye and the two gray sucking fish that swam　around him. Sometimes they darted off. Sometimes they would swim easily in this shadow. They were each over three feet long and when they swam fast they lashed their whole bodies like eels.

「針路を南西に取ればいいんだ」彼は言った。「海では迷子になんかならないからな。長い島のどこかに帰れればいい」
　三周目に入った時、彼は初めて魚の姿を目にした。
　暗い影として姿を現した魚は、信じられないほどの長い時間をかけて、船の下を通り過ぎた。
「まさか」彼は言った。「そんなに大きいはずはない」
　しかし、魚は大きかった。三周目の円を描き終わった時、魚は、船から三十ヤードしか離れていないあたりで海面近くまで浮かんできた。老人には、その尾ひれが水から出ているのが見えた。それは後ろに傾斜した形で、大鎌の刃よりも高くそびえ、暗い青色の海の上で薄紫に輝いていた。魚が水面すれすれを泳いだので、老人はその巨大な胴体と、紫色の縞模様とを確認することができた。背びれは畳まれ、大きな胸びれは左右に広げられていた。
　今回の周回で、老人は初めて魚の目を見た。そばには二匹の灰色のコバンザメがまとわりついている。時には吸いつく。時には離れる。時には、大魚の影に隠れて悠々と泳ぐ。コバンザメはどちらも三フィートくらいの大きさで、速く泳ぐ時にはウナギのように全身をしならせていた。
