S:　I can’t believe you’re leaving in a couple of days, Mei.
M: I know! Two months passed really fast!
S: It was really good. We did a lot of cool stuff.
M: Yeah, we did.
S: Going to see Mount Cook, visiting Abel Tasman National Park ….
M: And meeting you and your lovely family.
S: And chatting together. I’m so happy I met you.
M: Me too, of course…. But there are still so many things that I want to see and do before I go home.
S: Well… good!
M: Good? Sorry, what do you mean?
S: Because we will have lots to do when you come back!

　　You’ve equaled the record for exceeding the quarterly sales quota.
　　(あなたは四半期の販売ノルマを突破した記録に並びました。)
H: Really? I can’t believe it. Who do I share it with?
V: Actually, it’s me! I doubled my quota in my first year as a rep.
　　Similarly, you doubled yours last quarter.
H: So, do I get a big bonus?
V: I’m afraid not. But if you beat the record next quarter, you’ll get a huge bonus.
H: OK. I’m sure I can do even better. Just watch me.

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway　“The Old Man and the Sea”　(98)

　“I moved him,” the old man said. “I moved him then.”
　He felt faint again now but he held on the great fish all the strain that he could. I moved him, he thought. Maybe this time I can get him over. Pull, hands he thought. Hold up, legs. Last for me, head. Last for me. You never went. This time I’ll pull him over.
　But when he pull all of his effort on, starting it well out before the fish came alongside and pulling with all his strength, the fish pulled part way over and then righted himself and swam away.
　“Fish,” the old man said. “Fish, you are going to have to die away. Do you have to kill me too?”
　That way nothing is accomplished, he thought. His mouth was too dry to speak but he could not reach for the water now. I must get him alongside this time, he thought. I am not good for many more turns. Yes you are, he told himself. You’re good for ever.
　On the next turn, he nearly had him. But again the fish righted himself and swam slowly away.

「奴を動かした」老人は言った。「俺が動かしたんだ」
　また眩暈がした。しかし彼は全力で引き続け、大魚に食らいついていた。奴を動かしたぞ、と彼は思った。きっと今回で奴に勝てる。手よ、引け。足よ、踏んばれ。彼は思った。頭よ、しっかりしろ。しっかりしてくれよ。気を失ったことなど無いだろう。ここで奴を引っ張り寄せるんだ。
　だが、まだ魚がそばに来る前に全力を込めて引っ張り始めると、魚は少し揺らいだ後、また体を立て直して泳ぎ、遠ざかって行った。
「魚よ」老人は言った。「魚よ、どうあがいてもお前は死ぬしかないんだ。お前のほうは、俺を殺すしかないというのか？」
　それじゃどうにもならないな。彼は思った。喋れないほど口の中が乾いていたが、水に手を伸ばすこともできなかった。今度こそ必ず、奴を船の脇まで引き寄せる。このうえ何度も周回されたら耐えられない。いや、そんなことはないぞ。彼は自分に言った。お前は永遠にでもやれる。
　次の一周で、勝負はほとんど決まりかけた。しかし、魚はまた元通りに立ち直り、ゆっくり遠ざかって行った。
