▶学校の課題で10人にインタビューしているタツオ(T)とコウスケ(K)の会話。
T: I’m a bit tired. Interviewing ten people is hard.
K: Are you finished already?
T: Yeah, I spoke to ten people.
K: Really, Tatsuo? There are still lots of people I need to speak to before I’m finished.
T: I couldn’t hear you. How many?
K: Lots! Actually, six people.
T: Why is it talking you so long, Kosuke? What were you doing?
K: I was… I was talking to Sumiko.
T: Sumiko? Oh, I understand. I’m sure that took a long time.
K: What? No! She’s just really friendly.
T: And really cute. Come on, Kosuke. Be honest! You like her, don’t you?
K: What? Me? I… uh… I need to speak to more people!

T: Nice to meet you, Brian. I’m Taeko. I’ve seen pictures of this place on your website.
　　But it’s bigger than I imagined.
B: Yes, we’ve recently expanded. Our company is growing all the time.
　　So, you live in Tokyo. Is that right?
T: Yes. I live in a convenient part of the city.
　　On the other hand, the rent is high.
B: Oh, it’s probably not as high as this area.

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway “The Old Man and the Sea” (99)

　You are killing me, fish, the old man thought. But you have a right to. Never I have seen a greater, more beautiful, or a calmer or more noble thing than you, brother. Come on and kill me. I do not care who kills who.
　Now you are getting confused in the head, he thought. You must keep your head clear. Keep your head clear and know how to suffer like a man. Or a fish, he thought.
　“Clear up, head,” he said in a voice he could hardly hear. “Clear up.”
　Twice more it was the same on the turns.
　I do not know, the old man thought. He had been on the point of feeling himself go each time. I do not know. But I will try it once more.
　He tried it once more and he felt himself going when he turned the fish. The fish righted himself and swam off again slowly with the great tail weaving in the air.
　I’ll try it again, the old man promised, although his hands were mushy now and he could only see well in flashes.

魚よ、お前は俺を殺す気だろう。老人は考えた。確かにお前にはその資格がある。俺は今までに、お前ほど立派で、美しくて、落ち着いていて高貴な奴を見たことがない。兄弟よ。来い、俺を殺すがいい。どちらがどちらを殺したって、構わないんだ。
　頭が鈍ってきたな。彼は思った。頭は明晰に保っておかなければ。明晰な頭で、人間らしく苦しむべきだ。あるいは魚らしく。彼はそう考えた。
　「頭よ、しっかりしろ」自分にもほとんど聞こえない声で言った。「しっかりしろ」
　さらに二度、周回のたびに同じことが起きた。
　何だこれは。老人は思った。彼は毎回気を失いかけた。分からない。だが、もう一度やるぞ。
　彼はもう一度試みたが、魚を引っくり返したかと思うと、気を失いそうになるのだった。魚は立ち直り、水面から出した大きな尾を揺らして、またゆっくりと遠ざかっていく。
　もう一度だ。老人は誓った。両手はもうぼろぼろで、目には途切れ途切れの光景しか見えなかった。
