Ⅰ．基礎英語３　Lesson 62　Going on a school excursion in Japan
▶日本で初めて修学旅行に行くカナダからの留学生ザック(Z)とクラスメイトのユリ(Y)との会話。
Z: Yuri, we’re going on the school excursion to Kyoto next week.
　　It’s my first time to go on a school excursion in Japan.
Y: I hope you’ll enjoy it, Zac. We’re going to see lots of beautiful and interesting places.
　　We will visit temples, shrines and museums. We can learn a lot about history.
Z: Excellent! I hope our hotel is nice, too.
Y: I think it will be. But big groups of students will be sharing rooms.
　　Is that unusual for you?
Z: No. People doing typical Japanese things are interesting!
　　And we share rooms on school trips in Canada, too.

Ⅱ．ラジオ英会話　Lesson 62　論点の配列①：「最初に・次に・最後に」の流れ
▶ロキシー(R)がオリジナルのレシピを父(D)に伝授する。
R: Dad, I want to teach you a new recipe. I’m tired of seafood paella.
D: Sure. What is it?
R: It’s called “Spaghetti a la Roxy.” It’s my own recipe.
　　I’ve prepared all the ingredients.
D: OK. Show me how it’s made, then.
R: First, fry the chopped onion.
D: Right. That’s easy.
R: Second, add the tomatoes, garlic and herbs.
D: Simple enough.
R: Lastly, add the al dente pasta to the sauce and mix everything together.
D: Is that it?
R: Yes.

〇Key Sentence
　First, fry the chopped onion.　
まず、みじん切りしたタマネギを炒めてください。
　Second, add the tomatoes, garlic and herbs.
　　次に、トマト、ニンニク、ハーブを加えてください。
　Lastly, add the al dente pasta to the sauce and mix everything together.
　　最後に、そのソースに固めにゆでたパスタを加え、全部混ぜてください。
　★at first、at lastと混同しない！
　　at first…「最初は、初めのうちは」、at last…「ついに、とうとう」
　① At first I was very nervous, but after a while I began to really enjoy my new job.
　　　最初のうちは新しい仕事にとても神経質になっていたが、しばらくするととても楽しめるようになった。
　② You’re here at last! We’re been waiting for ages!

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway　“The Old Man and the Sea”　(106)

　Now he knew there was the fish and his hands and back were no dream. The hands cure quickly, he thought. I bled them clean and the salt water will heal them. The dark water of the true gulf it’s the greatest healer that there is. All I must do is keep the head clear. The hands have done their work and we sail well. With his mouth shut and his tail straight up and down we sail like brothers. The his head started to become a little unclear and he thought, is he bringing me in or am I bringing him in? If I were towing him behind there would be no question. Nor if the fish were in the skiff, with all dignity gone, there would be no question either. But they were sailing together lashed side by side and the old man thought, let him bring me in if it pleases him. I am only better than him through trickery and he meant me no harm.
　The sailed well and the old man soaked his hands in the salt water and tried to keep his head clear. There were high cumulus clouds and enough cirrus above them so that the old man knew the breeze would last all night. The old man looked at the fish constantly to make sure it was true. It was an hour before the first shark hit him.

今は分かっている。魚はそこにいるし、両手も背中も夢ではない。手の傷はすぐに治るだろう。彼はそう思った。手から出る血はもう出し切ったから、あとは塩水が治してくれる。メキシコ湾の暗い色の水は、何より効く薬だ。とにかく俺がすべきなのは、頭をはっきりさせておくことだな。両手は仕事を終えたし、船の進みは快調だ。奴は口を閉じ、尾をまっすぐ上下させて、俺たちは兄弟のように進んで行く。その時、頭が少しぼやけ始め、彼は考えた。奴が俺を運んでいるのか、それとも、俺が奴を運んでいるのか。後ろにいる奴を俺が引っ張っている状況なら、疑う余地は無い。魚が船に載っていて、その威厳も消え去っているなら、やはり疑う余地はないだろう。老人と魚は、しかし横並びに結ばれて一緒に進んでいた。彼は思った。奴がそうしたいなら、俺を運ぶがいい。俺は策略で奴に勝っただけだし、奴は悪意を持ってはいなかった。
　彼らの船は順調に進んだ。老人は手を塩水に浸し、しっかりした頭を保つよう努めた。空高く積雲が浮かび、その上には巻雲(けんうん)がたくさん出ていたから、風は一晩中やまないと分かった。老人はたびたび魚のほうを見て、それが現実であることを確かめていた。それから一時間。最初のサメが、彼を襲った。
