Ⅰ．基礎英語３　Lesson 64　Carnivals in England

Have you been to a carnival? In England, some towns have a carnival every year. This is a festival that continues for several days. There are many events, shows, displays and activities. There is often a traveling funfair and a big parade. It’s all organized by local people.
A traveling funfair is like a small theme park. All of the attractions are moved on trucks. They drive to different towns all around the UK. You can try bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, a haunted house and many other things. There are a lot of food stalls, too.
Probably the most popular event is the parade. Trucks and platforms called floats are colorfully decorated. Some local people dress in costumes and walk with the parade. Some ride and dance on the floats. Marching bands play music as they walk. Carnivals are very popular community events.

Ⅲ．Ernest Hemingway “The Old Man and the Sea” (108)

They were not the ordinary pyramid-shaped teeth of most sharks. They were shaped like a man’s fingers when they are crisped like claws. They were nearly as long as the fingers of the old man and they had razor-sharp cutting edges on both sides. This was a fish built to feed on all the fishes in the sea, that were so fast and strong and well armed that they had no other enemy. Now he speeded up as he smelled the fresher scent and his blue dorsal fin cut the water.
　When the old man saw him coming he knew that this was a shark had no fear at all and would do exactly what he wished. He prepared the harpoon and made the rope fast while he watched the shark come on. The rope was short as it lacked what he had cut away to lash the fish.
　The old man’s head was clear and good now and he was full of resolution but he had little hope. It was too good to last, he thought. He took one look at the great fish as he watched the shark close in. It might as well have been a dream, he thought. I cannot keep him from hitting me but maybe I can get him. Dentuso, he thought. Bad luck to your mother.

それは一般的なサメのピラミッド型の歯とは違って、人間の指が鉤爪のように曲がっている時の形に近い。老人の指くらいの長さがあり、歯の両側はかみそりのように鋭かった。海の中の全ての魚を食い尽くすために造られた魚だ。速さの面でも強さの面でも武装の面でも、敵はいない。そのサメが今、新鮮な匂いを嗅ぎつけて速度を上げた。青い背びれが水を切る。
　姿を見てすぐに、老人にはそれがサメだと分かった。恐れを知らず、望むものは全て手に入れるサメだ。彼はサメが近づくのを監視しながら、銛を用意してロープをしっかり結びつけた。魚を縛るために切ってしまった分、ロープは短かった。
　老人の頭は今、はっきりと明晰だった。決意がみなぎっていた。しかし、望みはほとんど無かった。あまりに良い事は長続きしないものだ、彼はそう思った。近づくサメに注意しながらも、彼は大魚を一瞥する。夢だったら良かった、と彼は思う。襲ってくるのは避けられないが、きっと、倒すことはできる。彼は思った。この畜生、牙野郎(デントゥーソ)め。
