P: Oh no! Look! It has been canceled!
W: Then we’re going to need to get new tickets. But I don’ want to pay again!
P: Hopefully, we can exchange the ones we have. I’ll ask this station worker.
　　Excuse me, is there a ticket office near here?
Station worker: There are tickets machines near the entrance.
W: Thanks, but we need to exchange the tickets we have. Our train was cancelled!
Station Worker: Then yes, you do need to go to the ticket office.

　The Hotel Paradiso was very pretty, but not what Merrick wanted. He knew this after two minutes’ inspection of its main hall with its inner court of little fruit trees and a sixteenth-century well, open to the sky. The tiles of the floors were lovely, the view from his window of the Mediterranean as commanding as that from the bridge of a ship, but it was not what he wanted. Nevertheless, Merrick stayed the night, and the next morning hired a car to go on. While he waited in the hotel for the car to arrive, he looked in the small local newspaper for anything about the man who had jumped from the bridge.
　It was a short one-column item on the second page. His name was Dino Bartucci, 32, umemployed mason, with a wife and five children (their names and ages were given, all were under ten); his wife was in poor health, and Bartucci had been extremely moths. He had twice said to friends, ‘If I were dead, the State would at least give my wife and children a small pension.

　＜ホテル・パラディソ＞はとてもきれいであったが、メリックの期待したものとは違っていた。それは果樹が一、二本に十六世紀風の井戸のある広々とした中庭に面したメイン・ホールを二、三分眺め渡しただけでわかった。床のタイルは美しかったし、部屋の窓から見える地中海の眺めも、船のブリッジからみるように素晴らしいものだったが、彼の期待していたものとは違っていた。しかしともかくその晩は泊まって、翌朝タクシーを呼んで立つことにした。ホテルで車が来るのを待つ間に、陸橋から飛び降りた男のことが何か出てこないかと思って小さな地方新聞をのぞいてみた。
　二面に簡単な記事が出ていた。男の名はディノ・バルトゥッチで、三十二歳になる失業中の石工だった。妻と五人の子供がいる(子供たちの名前と年齢も出ていたが、みんな十歳以下だった)。妻は病気で、バルトゥッチは何ヶ月も前からひどく元気がなく、くよくよしていた。前に二度も友人たちに、「おれが死ねば、すくなくとも国は女房と子供たちにわずかながらも年金をくれるだろう」と言ったことがある。
