Ⅰ．基礎英語３　　Lesson 174　The Orient Express
●Reading
　Many people think the Orient Express is a luxury train. They imagine mysterious journeys on an old-fashioned steam strain. This popular image comes from many books, movies and TV shows, but did you know the Orient Express was not the name of one train?
　The first service of the Orient Express went from Paris to Istanbul in 1883. But on this journey, passengers had to change trains and even use a boat. Since then, the places the Orient Express stopped at and the trains that were used have changed many times. The Orient Express was actually the name of this entire train service.
　The Orient Express was known for its beautiful carriages and delicious food. It was used for scenes in many movies. Unfortunately, the original service stopped in 2009, and one of the dining cars is now in a museum. Today, several privately-owed services use the name “Orient Express” and run luxurious trains in many countries.

‘I know the best hotel here, sir. Shall I take your there?’
Merrick did not want to come to a decision so soon. ‘No. Drive through the town first. Please.’
　The road took them above the town, round the semicircle of the amphitheatre. There were no road in the town proper, only steps and slating footpaths.
‘What about this?’ Merrick said, indicating a hotel on their left. Its wrought-iron sign said Hotel Orlando, flat and black against its white front.
‘Very well.’ The driver pulled into the parking area in front of the hotel.
A bellboy came out.
It was probably a very ordinary hotel, Merrick thought, but it looked rather expensive, so he supposed it would be clean and the service good. Merrick paid the driver and tipped him.

　メリックは急いで決めたくなかった。「いや、まず町を一回りしてくれないか。やってくれ」
　道は円形劇場の半円を回って町へつづいている。町の中心部には道路らしい道路はなく、段や傾斜した歩道があるばかりだった。
「ここはどうかな？」メリックは左手のホテルを指さして言った。真っ白な正面の構えと対照的な平たくて黒い鋳鉄の看板には、＜ホテル・オルランド＞と出ていた。
「わかりました」運転手はホテルの前の車寄せに車をつけた。
　ボーイが出てきた。
　たぶんごく普通のホテルだろうとメリックは思ったが、料金はかなり高そうな感じなので、中は清潔でサーヴィスもよさそうに思えた。運転手に料金を払い、チップもやった。
