LF: We’ve got lots of lack umbrella. Can you give me a detailed description?
M: Sure. There’s a white button on the handle.
LF: Okay.
M: And there’s a gray wrist strap attached to the handle.
LF: Is this it?
M: That’s it! Thanks!

H: Yes!
W: What about that pen in your shirt pocket?
H: (greatly relieved) Oh, you found it!
W: Yeah, it was in plain sight. (They both laugh.)

For months ago his wife Helena and their only son, their only child, Adam had been killed in a collision on a New Jersey parkway in a car driven by Adam. Merrick had not reacted badly at first, he had three months later. He had had to stop going to his office at Merrick Weaves, Inc. in White Plains, not really because he felt as bad as the doctors thought he did, but because his going seemed to have no purpose. The textile factory continued to produce just as well without him as With him. His sister Wynne had come to stay in his White Plains house with him for two weeks, but since she had a household of her own, that couldn’t last for ever. Her presence in the empty house, wonderful as Wynne was, had really not touched Merrick’s melancholia, anyway, though he had pretended to her that he felt better. He lost weight even though it seemed to him, perhaps because of the effort it took, that he was poking the same amount of food down himself as he always had.

四ヶ月前ニュージャージー乗用車専用道路の衝突事故で妻のヘレナと、一人息子でひとりっ子のアダムを失った。運転していたのはアダムだった。メリックは最初それほどひどいショックを受けなかったが、三ヶ月から利いてきた。ホワイト・プレインズにあるメリック織物会社に出社しなくなった――が、医者が考えたようなひどいショックを受けたためでなく、出社することが無意味に思えたからだった。織物工場は彼が出社しなくてもちゃんと生産を続けていた。妹のウィンはホワイト・ブレインズの彼の家に来て二週間ほど一緒に暮らしてくれたが、彼女にも自分の家庭があるので、そうそういつまでもいるわけには行かなかった。ウィンはよくしてくれたし、彼も彼女には気分がよくなったような顔をして見せていたが、がらんとした家に彼女がいてくれたところで、実は大して憂鬱な気持ちが晴れるわけではなかった。食事も今まで通りの量をとっていたが、無理に食べていたせいか体重は減った。
