Ancient pyramids are mysterious structures. Many have been built around the world. They were often used as temples or tombs, but for some of them, their purpose is still unknown. There are many different types of pyramids, but most of them have the same basic design.
Some people wonder why there are many pyramids built by different cultures. They also ask how humans built such huge structures thousands of years ago. They ask, “How could humans move such huge and heavy rocks?” One answer is that pyramids were built out of hills that were already there.
In reality, scientists aren’t completely sure why or how they were built. But some believe the pyramid shape is simply one of the easiest for a large, strong structure. And the pyramids were almost certainly built by humans. Building techniques and even the names of workmen have been discovered in Egypt.

「抜け目のない泥棒ですよ。重みをつけるために石を入れてるんですからね。見せてあげなさいよ」とエレアノーラが言う。
「ええ、浜の石ですの」とアメリカ女はちょっと微笑しながら言う。
　メリックがハンドバックをのぞいてみると、その日の午後セッペと一緒に拾い集めたタイルのかけらがいくつか見えた。
