●Today’s Story　～イギリス出身ヴィクトリア(V)の家で、夕食をとるミユキ(M)～
V: I hope you’re hungry, Miyuki. We’re eating English food today!
M: Wow, this looks interesting! What is it?
V: It’s a popular meal in England called “bangers and mash.”
M: Bangers?
V: Yes. Bangers mean sausages. It’s sausages, baked beans and mashed potatoes.
　　I know it might look a bit unusual to you, but I love it! It’s so tasty!
M: Why are they called “bangers”? Do they go bang?
V: Haha, no! My dad said it’s because they used to make a popping sound
　　when they were cooked.
M: Oh, I see. I can’t wait to try it.

R: Yes. Changing the subject, did you know that Tom is dating Masami?
S: What? I thought Masami didn’t like Tom.
And I told Tom to stop using the club for dating.
Ｒ: Oh, Tom followed the rules. He started playing with other club members more.
S: So, what happened?
R: I think Masami secretly liked Tom.
S: Unbelievable.

Merrick smiled and relaxed. ‘No, I didn’t think you did.’
‘Gesu Maria! Police in my house!’ He glanced around to see if anyone were listening, though he had not spoken loudly, and the man at the nearest table was buried behind the Pris Herald-Tribune. ‘I never had police in my house before. What did you tell them?’
‘Well－I certainly didn’t tell them to go looking for you. It was the hotel manager’s idea. Sit down, Seppe. －They thought you robbed a woman’s pocketbook. I couldn’t stop them from going to you.’
Seppe said something under his breath that Merrick could not understand, and shook his head.
‘I’ve just had lunch. Would you like something?’

　メリックはほっとして笑みを浮かべた。「きみがやったなんて思っちゃいないさ」
「いやになっちゃうな！おまわりがうちにくるなんて！」大きな声で言ったわけではなかったが、彼は誰かに聞かれはしないかというふうにチラッと見まわした。最寄りのテーブルにいた男は、パリのヘラルド・トリビュ－紙に読みふけっている。「今までおまわりなんて一度も来たことがないのに。おじさん、おまわりになんて言ったの？」
「いや……きみを探しに行けなんて絶対に言いはしなかったよ。あれはホテルの支配人の考えさ。お座り、セッペ……警察じゃっきみが女の人の財布を盗んだと思ったんだ。警官がきみのところへ行くのをとめるわけにもいかんからな」
　セッペはメリックにわからないことをないかぶつぶつ呟いて首を振った。
「わたしは食事をしてきたばかりだが、何か食べたいかね？」
