●Dialog　T＝Tyler、N=Nana
T: My relatives from the U.S. are going to visit me in Japan next year.
　　My aunt, uncle and two cousins are going to come here from Los Angeles.
　　They’re asking which is the best season to visit.
N: Really? What do you think?
T: I’d say that autumn is the best season. You can see a lot of colorful leaves.
　　At some parks and temples, the beautiful trees are lit up at night.
N: Good point.
T: Also, there are a lot of delicious seasonal food, such as matsutake mushrooms,
　　chestnuts and sweet potatoes!
N: That’s true. But I’d recommend visiting during spring. I love the warm weather.
　　You can see the beautiful cherry blossoms by the riverside,
　　and the pink petals all over the water.
　　My family usually has a picnic in the park under the cherry trees.

　Her elbow against the brazier, Komako was scribbling something on the back of an old magazine when Shimamura awoke the next morning.
　“I can’t go home. I jumped up when the maid came to bring charcoal, but it was already broad daylight. The sun was shining in on the door. I was a little drunk last night, and I slept too well.”
　“What time is it?”
　“It’s already eight.”
　“Let’s go have a bath.” Shimamura got out of bed.
　“I can’t. Someone might see me in the hall.” She was completely tamed. When Shimamura came back from the bath, he found her industriously cleaning the room, a kerchief draped artistically over her head.
　She had polished the legs of the table and the edge of the brazier almost too carefully, and she stirred up the charcoal with a practiced hand.

　翌(あく)る朝、島村が目を覚ますと、駒子はもう火燵へ片肘突いて古雑誌の裏に落書きしていたが、
「ねえ、帰れないわ。女中さんが火を入れに来て、みっともない。驚いて飛び起きたら、もう障子に火があたってるんですもの。昨夜酔ってたから、とろとろと眠っちゃったらしいわ。」
「幾時。」
「もう八時。」
「お湯へ行こうか。」と、島村は起き上がった。
「いや、廊下で人に会うから。」とまるでおとなしい女になってしまって、島村が湯から帰った時は、手拭を器用にかぶってかいがいしく部屋の掃除をしていた。
　机の足や火鉢の縁まで癇性に拭いて、灰を掻きならすのがもの馴れた様子であった。

　

◎Photo：5月に入って1日、2日と連続で午後から雨。昨日は、午後6時近くに西の方面が雲が切れて西日が当たってくる。こんな時は虹が出そうだなと思っていたら、案の定、東側に虹が出る。
