〔Theme 1 : Which is the best season to visit Japan? 〕
●Dialog　T＝Tyler、N=Nana
T: My relatives from the U.S. are going to visit me in Japan next year.
　　My aunt, uncle and two cousins are going to come here from Los Angeles.
　　They’re asking which is the best season to visit.
N: Really? What do you think?
T: I’d say that autumn is the best season. You can see a lot of colorful leaves.
　　At some parks and temples, the beautiful trees are lit up at night.
N: Good point.
T: Also, there are a lot of delicious seasonal food, such as matsutake mushrooms,
　　chestnuts and sweet potatoes!
N: That’s true. But I’d recommend visiting during spring. I love the warm weather.

　Shimamura sat idly smoking, his feet in the kotatsu. When the ashes dropped from his cigarette Komako too them up in a handkerchief and brought him an ashtray. He laughed, a bright morning laugh. Komako laughed too.
　“If you had a husband, you’d spend all your time scolding him.”
　“I would not. But I’d be laughed at for folding up even my dirty clothes. I can’t help it. That’s the way I am.”
　“They say you can tell everything about a woman by looking inside her dresser drawers.”
　“What a beautiful day.” They were having breakfast, and the morning sun flooded the room. “I should have gone home early to practice the samisen. The sound is different on a day like this.” She looked up at the crystal-clear sky.
　The snow on the distant mountains was soft and creamy, as if veiled in a faint smoke.

　島村が火燵へ足を入れたままごろ寝して煙草の灰を落すと、それを駒子はハンカチでそっと拭き取っては、灰皿を持って来た。島村は朝らしく笑いだした。駒子も笑った。
「君が家を持ったら、亭主は叱られ通しだね。」
「なにも叱りゃしないじゃないの。洗濯するものまで、きちんと畳んでおくって、よく笑られるけれど、性分ね。」
「箪笥のなかを見れば、その女の性質が分るって言うよ。」
　部屋いっぱいの朝日に温まって飯を食いながら、
「いいお天気。早く帰って、お稽古をすればよかったわ。こんな日は音がちがう。」
　駒子は澄み深まった空を見上げた。
　遠い山々は雪が煙ると見えるような柔らかい乳色につつまれていた。



◎Photo：以前から行ってみたいと思っていたさいたま市の盆栽美術館に行ってきた。いろいろな芸術があるが、盆栽は日本が誇る崇高な芸術だと思った。右下の盆栽の推定樹齢は800年とか。Unbelievable!
