M: Where did you get that jacket, Yuri?
Y: Actually, this is my mom’s old jacket. I’m into reusing family clothes.
　　My mom lets me use her on old things. I think retro fashion is so cool.
M: Yeah.
Y: You can find some really unique designs.
　　Also, we can save money and we don’t throw away so many clothes.
M: What s great idea!
Y: What are you into, Mike?
M: Well, I enjoy visiting old castles in Japan.

M: Yeah. It’s so interesting. I’m learning a lot about Japanese history,

　He was generally familiar with the Nagauta music of Tokyo theater and dance, and he knew the words to most of the repertoire. He had no formal training, however. Indeed he associated the Nagauta less with the parlor performance of the geisha than with the actor on the stage.
　“The customer is being difficult.” Giving her lower lip a quick little bite, Komako brought the samisen to her knee, and, as if that made her a different person, turned earnestly to the lyrics before her.
　“I’ve been practicing this one since last fall.”
　A chill swept over Shimamura. The goose flesh seemed to rise even to his cheeks. The first notes opened a transparent emptiness deep in his entrails, and in the emptiness the sound of the samisen reverberated. He was startled―or, better, he fell back as under a well-aimed blow. Taken with a feeling almost of reverence, washed by waves of remorse, defenseless, quite deprived of strength―there was nothing for him to do but give himself up to the current, to the pleasure of being swept off whenever Komako would take him.

　彼は東京の下町育ちで、幼い時から歌舞伎や日本踊になじむうちに長唄の文句くらいは覚え、自ずと耳慣れているが、自分で習いはしなかった。長唄といえば直ぐ踊の舞台が思い浮かび、芸者の座敷を思い出さぬという風である。
「いやだわ。一番肩の張るお客様。」と駒子はちらっと下唇を噛んだが、三味線を膝に構えると、それでもう別人になるのか、素直に稽古本を開いて、
「この秋、譜で稽古したのね。」
勧進帳であった。
　忽ち島村は頬から鳥肌立ちそうに涼しくなって、腹まで澄み通ってきた。たわいなく空にされた頭のなかいっぱいに、三味線の音が鳴り渡った。全く彼は驚いてしまったと言うよりも叩きのめされてしまったのである。敬虔の念に打たれた。悔恨の思いに洗われた。自分はただもう無力であって、駒子の力に思いのまま押し流されるのを快いと身を捨てて浮ぶよりしかたがなかった。
