【Theme 4】 What kind of pet do you want to have?
●Dialog　V=Vickie、R=Ryoma
V: Hey, Ryoma. Look at this photo.
R: Oh, a chameleon! It’s cute!
V: Yeah. I’m thinking about having one as a pet. Do you have any pets?
R: Actually, I already have a pet parrot, but I want to my parrot to have a friend.
V: You want another parrot?
R: Yes. But they need to be the same size and the same type of parrot.
　　If they aren’t, my parrot may fight the new one.
V: I see.
R: I really like parrots because they can talk and you can talk to them.
　　So, why do you want a chameleon as a pet?
V: Because they are amazing! They can change colors. And they have fantastic eyes.
R: Really? What are their eyes like?
V: Their eyes can look in different directions at the same time.
　　And I like the way chameleons move and eat, too.
　　They’ve got really long tongues! But you have to feed them bugs.
R: Bugs? Wow!

G: Where do you want to go, Roxy?
R: I’ve always wanted to visit Stonehenge.
G: Stonehenge? My goodness, I haven’t been there in decades.
R: Is it far from here?
G: It’s about as far as London.
R: Can you take me to Stonehenge, Grandpa?
G: Sure. How about next Saturday?
R: That would be wonderful!

　She took up the samisen again and shifted her weight so that her feet were a little to one side and the instrument rested on the calf of one leg.
　“This is the way you hold it when you’re small.” She leaned toward the samisen as though it were too large for her. “Da-a-ark hair. . .” Her voice was deliberately childish and she picked out the notes uncertainly.
　“’Dark Hair’ was the first one you leaned?”
　“Uh-uh.” She shook her head girlishly, as no bought she did in the days when she was still too small to hold the samisen properly.

　Komako no longer tried to leave before daybreak when she stayed the night.

　そしてまた三味線を拾い上げると、右足を折ったままずらせて、そのふくらはぎに三味線の胴を載せ、腰は左に崩しながら、体は右に傾けて、
「小さい時こうして習ったわ。」と、竿を覗き込むと、
「く、ろ、かあ、みい、の……。」と、幼げに歌って、ぽつんぽつん鳴らした。
「黒髪を最初に習ったの？」
「ううん。」と、駒子はその小さい時のように、かぶりを振った。

　それからは泊まることがあっても、駒子はもう強いて夜明け前に帰ろうとはしなくなった。



◎つぶやき：ここにきて、独裁国家の歪みをあらためて感じている。ロシアは領土拡大のために他国へ軍事侵攻し、中国はゼロコロナ政策の修正ができず未だに何都市もロックダウンし、北朝鮮はコロナ感染者ゼロの主張を覆し何十万の発熱者が毎日出ている。北朝鮮は先日マスクなしで何万も動員して大規模な軍事パレードを敢行したばかり。ワクチン支援をする意見もあるようだが、日本に向けてロケット弾を頻繁に飛ばす国に、そんな支援をする必要性はない。ロケットの予算でワクチンを買えばいい。3国に共通するのは独裁者は国民の生活は何も考えていないこと。
