M: Right. Even the poetic name of Japan, Mizuhonokuni,
means the country of lush rice stalks!
J: So mochi is an offering to the kami?
M: Well, common belief was that the rice contained the spirit of Toshogami.
That’s why mochi and rice wine or sake are served on New Year’s Day.

コーンは手前の部屋に坐って、新聞屋『エディター・アンド・パブリッシャー』誌を読み始めた。ぼくは二時間ほど懸命に働いた。それからカーボン・コピーを整理して署名のスタンプを押し、それを大判の二つのマニラ封筒に入れてから、ボーイを呼んで、サン・ラザール駅まで運ばせた。前の部屋に出て行ってみると、コーンのやつ、大きな椅子で眠っていた。両腕に頭をのせて眠っていた。起こしたくはなかったが、もうオフィスを閉めて、帰りたかった。で、片手で彼の肩をゆすってみた。彼は頭をふった。「できないよ」と言って、ますます頭を腕に埋めてしまう。「できないったら。ぜったしにしないからな、そんなことは」
◎つぶやき１：YouTubeでは、道路陥没現場のライブ映像がずっと流れている。依然として、陥没に落ちたトラックの運転手はまだ助けられていないという。この寒さの中、何とも痛ましい。
◎つぶやき２：昨日は、都内のあるイベントがあった。土足厳禁の会場だったので、入口で靴を脱いで入った。ところが、他の人の靴とはき違えて帰ってきてしまった。自宅に帰り、主催者から写真付きで履き間違えてないかの問い合わせのDMが送られてきて、その時に初めて気がついた。何という失態。サイズと色、形状が同じだったせいで、まったく気がつかなかった。先方の方は車で1時間くらい離れているところだったので、指定の駅で待ち合わせることにした。行く途中コンビニで手土産を買って持って行った。交通費も含めた寸志を渡そうとしたが受け取らなかった。人生には、時にこうしたことに時間を費やしてしまうことがあるものだと思った。

27日(月)30日(木)百貨店は賑わっていましたが、天神橋筋商店街は人もまばらで閑散としていたので…、驚きました。

春節で多くの人が旅行に出る、というニュースは聞きましたが、この写真の混雑ぶりはスゴイですね！
なんか迷惑千万という気がします。旅行に来てくれてうれしいなんて気にはなりませんね。

私は22.0㎝のごく小さい靴なので、よほどでない限り間違えて履いていく人はいないように思います。
