Lesson11 Doctors on Board (3)

Summary

Collins lists medical problems that are typical during flights. And Ueda says he tries to sleep well and drink plenty of water before flying. Salmans says in-flight medical problems are increasingly likely to occur which is prompting the airlines to think about how they should handle them. McMillan says the airlines have to train their cabin attendants in first-aid.

McMillan: And it can be a real problem for people who have to take medication at set times.

Collins: According to my uncle, typical in-flight medical incidents include dizziness, fainting and diarrhea. They can also involve nausea and vomiting, shortness of breath, heart palpitations and headache.

Ueda: I always try to get a good night's sleep and drink plenty of water before I fly somewhere.

Collins: That's what my uncle advices people to do.

Salmans: What does he say are some of the more serious in-flight medical emergencies?

Collins: The most common ones are heart attacks, seizures and strokes. They require the plane to be diverted.

Salmans: We can expect more in-flight medical incidents in the future, I'm sorry to say. The population is aging, and more Americans are flying than ever before. This is causing a lot of people in the airline industry to think hard of about how to respond to such emergencies.

McMillan: Hmm, that's a tough problem. I know airlines have to provide first-aid training for cabin crew so that they can recognize common signs of distress.

*distress :
Distress, suffering, misery, agony mean the state of being great trouble or pain of body or mind.
