Recent mass shootings in the U.S. have prompted sales of an item for children.
Bulletproof backpacks are in high demand as parents do back-to-school shopping.
But the packs are also stirring debate.
A Texas-based manufacture says sales have tripled since August.
The shields cost about one hundred thirty dollars and are placed inside packs.
The company says they are as strong as the bulletproof vests used by police.
Reactions from parents are mixed.
“I’m willing to spend that much money”, one mother says.
“Do I have that much money to spend on it?　No, I do not.　But am I willing to work the hours to do what I have to do as a mother to protect my child?　I am.”
A father has yet to buy that idea.
“Could you imagine a whole school full of kids talking about ‘we’ve got backpacks that are bulletproof’.　And what about the parents that can’t afford that.”

1.　「～するなかで」という意味での as を確認しよう

親たちが新学期のための買い物をする中、防弾リュックサックの需要が高くなっています。


ここでの as は、日本語での「～するなかで」「～という状況で」に相当します。
when と意味が似ていますが、as はその前後2つのことが同時に起きていて、何らかの関係があることを示します。この as は、何かが起きた時に、その背景や関連情報をさっと補足的に説明したい時にとても便利な言葉です。

この文の場合は
「学用品の買い物をするシーズンなので、防弾リュックも必要な学用品として売れているのだ」と示唆しています。





2.　現実の英語には、文法的逸脱が多いことを確認しよう。

But am I willing to work the hours to do what I have to do as a mother to protect my child?　I am.

でも私は、子供を守るために母親としてしなければならないことに何時間も働く気があるだろうか？　その気はあります。

実は、この母親の実際のインタビューでは I am. ではなく I will.「私はそうします」と答えていました。
しかし、I will. と答えるのであれば、質問は Will I ～? でなくてはいけません。
この答え方は、文法的ではないために今回の英文では I am. と修正してあります。

母親の言葉 I will. を補ってみると、彼女が言わんとしたことは
Yes, I am willing to do so and I will. だろうと考えることができます。





1.　stir　「（液体などを）かき混ぜる」「（議論などを）巻き起こす」

　彼女の話し方は、聴衆の熱意をかき立てます。

　Her way of speaking stirs enthusiasm in the audience.



1.　be willing to ～　「～する気・意志がある」

　英語をマスターするためには、努力しようとする意志が必要です。

　To master English, you have to be willing to work hard.

Bulletproof backpacks?
That’s something I’ve never considered.

Well, I think it’s something Japan doesn’t have to worry about.
But I can understand why American parents would be willing to buy these for their children.

Are school shootings really such a problem in America?

Technically, considering the number of schools there are in America, shootings are still quite rare.
But even though the percentage of schools that experienced incident is very small, no one can predict which school will be attacked.
And the number of shootings has increased.
Every time a shooting happens, it stirs a broad anxiety as people watch the reports on the news.

Well, I hope that the backpacks can help.

Even if they save one life, I think they’ll be worth it.
