Remote schools to get better online access

Japan’s education ministry plans to provide better online learning for elementary, junior high and high schools.
Those schools will have access to a superfast computer network currently used by universities.
The ministry’s immediate goal is to narrow the education gap between urban and rural communities.
The ministry already offers lessons via the internet for schools on remote islands and in underpopulated areas.
But officials say the connections are unstable, and video lectures sometimes get cut off.
So, the ministry will start connecting the nation’s primary and secondary schools with the science information network, or SINET.
It is a powerful computer network developed for universities and research institutions.
Officials say the link will ensure stable connections for remote learning.
They hope to kick off the effort in April.
Lessons may include lectures for high school students by university specialists.

【 ディスカッションのコーナー 】

I’m glad that Japan’s making this effort.
It’s easy for rural areas to get ??? to it.

Especially in Japan, with so many spread-out islands, it must be a challenge to provide fast computer network access to every community.
How is the situation in America?

Actually, I’m from Kentucky, and we have a similar educational gap.
There is an immediate need for better educational resources in our most rural areas.
I’m glad Japan’s research community is helping to improve the lives of regular Japanese children.

Yes, me too.
