◆限定詞 the のイメージを探る

Who were you talking to on the phone a few minutes ago?

It’s kind of late, isn’t it?
Ten o’clock at night.

She’s working overtime.

Oh, so it was a woman, but I’ve never known you to work so late.

You don’t have to be jealous, Emily.
You are the only girl I’ve ever loved.

サム、ちょっと聞いてもいい？

もちろんさ、エミリー。
何なんだい？

ついさっき電話で誰と話していたの？

ああ、あれは会社の人間だったんだ。

ちょっと時間が遅くない？
夜の10時なのよ。

彼女は残業中なんだ。

ああ、それじゃ女性だったのね、でも私は、あなたがこんなに遅くまで仕事をするなんて知らなかったわ。

★Oh, that was someone from work.
　ああ、あれは会社の人間だったんだ。
　　↓
　someone「誰か」というわけですね。
　もちろん、that was a guy from work. その表現も使えるわけです。
　でも someone をわざわざ使っているんですね。
　「この話を深掘りされたくない」
　そうした感触が、このぼんやりとした単語に見えてきます。

◆You don’t have to be jealous, Emily.
　やきもちを焼く必要はないよ、エミリー。

　have to は、「強い客観的な必要性」を表します。
　ここでは、必要性が not で否定されるため、
　「必要はありません」となっているんです。

　ちなみに、
　主観的な「しなくてはならないと私は思う」を表す must をnot と共に使えば
　You mustn’t be jealous. 「やきもちを焼いてはなりません」
　と、強い禁止を表すことになります。





◆You are the only girl I've ever loved.

　君は僕が今まで愛したただひとりの女性なんだから。

　the は意味なく自動的に only についているわけではありません。
　the は「1つに決まる」を表す限定詞
　「唯一」「最初の」なら1つに決まるはずだ
　そこで the が使われているんです。

　1つに決まるのでなければ、only にも the はつきません。
　Junko is an only child.　「順子は一人っ子です」
　　　↓
★So, why is “only” combined with the indefinite article “a”, “an”?

Well, that’s easy.
I mean, there are lots of only children in the world, aren’t there?
And she is one of them.
Yeah.


only child これは「ひとりっ子」という意味なんです。
世の中にたくさんいる「ひとりっ子」のなかの1人。
ですから、an only child となるわけです。

クリスは世界中を旅行したことがある。

Imagine a world free from prejudice.　　★prejudice　[ prédʒudis ]
偏見のない世界を想像してごらん。


さあ、ここで the world と a world の2つのバージョンが出てきましたね。
world に通常 the がつくのは、私たちの住む現実の世界が1つに決まるため。
world に自動で the がついているわけではありません。

1つに決まらない想像の産物なら、a world となります。

the はまた
the Ritz「ホテル リッツ」、the Savoy「サボイホテル」などホテル名
あるいは the Independent「インデペンデント紙」などの新聞名にも好んで使われますが、もちろん自動ではありません。「1つに決まるほど権威があり有名である」
the は名前に付ける王冠になっている、というわけです。



Love is the reason to get married.
愛は結婚する唯一の理由だ。
　　↓
a を使えば、「他にも色々ある理由の中の1つ」ということになりますが
the は「1つに決まるような理由なのだ」ということを表しています。



★So, when you want to put an emphasis on “the”, the is pronounced [ ðíː ], right?

That’s right, very strong, the [ ðíː ] !

この [ ðíː ] という発音はですね、the の強い意味を表すときの発音、強い形
Chris も冒頭にですね、the [ ðíː ] English program と言っていましたよね。
これは「1番すばらしい」という意味がこもったthe [ ðíː ]でしたよね。





私たちの目標は、プラスチック廃棄物のない世界にすることだ。
Our goal is to have a world free of plastic waste.
　　　↓
「想像上の世界」ですから the world ではなく a world



彼女は、僕が付き合った最初の女の子だった。
She was the first girl that I dated.
　　　↓
「最初の」と言えば、1つに決まりますね。だから the first。

お祝い用の飲み物はシャンパンしかないと、私は思います。
I think Champaign is the drink for celebration.
　　　↓
the [ ðíː ] drink 、the の強い形を使っていましたね。
a drink なら「他にもたくさんあるお祝いの飲み物の1つ」ということになります。
the [ ðíː ] drink とすることで、「最も適した、最高の、これっきゃない」といった大きな協調を与えることができるわけです。



So, what do you think is the drink after recording?
Well, you know, I think beer goes down very well after recording.

★go down　ここでは「（飲食物が）喉を通る、飲み込まれる」の意味



★stick with
　stickの「くっつく」「身動きがとれない」という意味から転じて、
　「～にくっついて離れない」「～を粘り強く続ける」「～を貫く」
　などのニュアンスで使われる表現です。
