◆Can you show me another?

　別のものを見せてもらえますか？

★「別のもの」という日本語には、この another のほか
　 the other・the others・others などが対応しています。
　 つまり、日本語訳では区別がつかない、ということ。
　 この使い分けには、限定詞のイメージが深く関わっているんです。
　
ここでは、an と other「他のもの」が結びついた another が使われていますが、それは複数あるうちの任意の「どれでもいいひとつ」を意味しています。
「他にもあるうちの1つ」という意味の a にピッタリの使い方ですよね。

　　　↓
★the other は、そもそも2つしかない場合に使います。
　2つしかなければ「ほかの」は1つに決まるため
　the が使われる、というわけです。



Can you show me the others?
　　　↓
★この the others、「the + 複数形」は、特定のグループ全体を表す表現
　例えば
　Look at the penguins.　「そのペンギンを見て」
　なら、その場にいるペンギン全体を指します。
　したがって the others は「他のものすべて」ということになります。



Can you show me others?
　　　↓
★others　何の指定もない「他のもの」
　「どれでも他のもの複数見せてくれ」ということになります。



◆◇◆ a reason・the reason・the reasons・reasons の意味の違い ◆◇◆

1.　Ken gave me a reason why he got divorced.
2.　Ken gave me the reason why he got divorced.
3.　Ken gave me the reasons why he got divorced.
4.　Ken gave me reasons why he got divorced.

「ケンは、彼が離婚した理由を話してくれた。」

Yeah, but this sounds a bit complicated.
Do you really differentiate these four?

Well, there are definite nuances between the four, but I think the overall messages relax.

They’re all correct.

お２人がおっしゃっていたように、あんまり神経質になることはありません。
どれを使っても大丈夫なわけですね。
でも、細かいニュアンスを乗せたかったら、しっかりと選ぶことが肝心です。

　離婚というのは、いろいろな理由がそもそもあるわけですよね。
　でも、a reason の場合は
　「いろんな理由がある中の1つを教えてくれた」



2.　Ken gave me the reason why he got divorced.

　the reason これは、致命的な理由があったんですね。
　「その致命的な1つしかない理由を教えてくれた」



3.　Ken gave me the reasons why he got divorced.

　the reasons これは「いろんな理由があって、そのすべてを教えてくれた」



4.　Ken gave me reasons why he got divorced.

　reasons これは「いくつかある理由の中のいくつかを話してくれた」





片一方の手袋は見つけたけど、もう片方はどこにあるのかなぁ。
I found one glove, but where is the other?
　　　↓
So, why do you always use “the other” for gloves?

Oh, that’s easy.
Because they always come in pairs, one glove and the other.

手袋は常に2つがペアになっていますよね。
従って、もう片方という場合は、the がついて the other というふうになるわけです。

★手袋　glove の発音　[ ɡlʌ́v ] に注意！！

Actually, an easy way to remember this is to say, love with a “ g “ in front of it, so, g-love, glove!
