When was this photo taken?
You look younger.

Oh, that was taken in Singapore over ten years ago.
We wanted to see the Merlion.

And do lots of shopping, right?

Of course!

You and your wife were soaking wet in this photo.

Yes.
Suddenly, it started pouring down.
We didn’t have umbrellas.
But the rain stopped after a few minutes and the sun came out again, so our clothes dried quickly.

Typical tropical weather.

Exactly.



この写真はいつ撮ったものなの？
あなたは今より若く見えるわ。

ああ、それは10年以上も前にシンガポールで撮られたものさ。
僕たちはマーライオンが見たかったんだ。

そして、たくさん買い物もしたかったんでしょ？

もちろんさ。

この写真の中で、あなたと奥さんはずぶ濡れになっているわね。

そう。
突然、どしゃ降りになってね。
僕たちは傘を持っていなかったんだ。
でも数分後に雨がやんで、再び日差しが出てきたから、僕たちの服はすぐに乾いたよ。

典型的な熱帯の天候ね。

そのとおり。



★soaking wet という表現
　ただ wet というわけでなく
　soaking レベルの wet だというわけですね。
「ずぶ濡れの」「びしょびしょの」というわけですね。

　雨がすごい勢いで降っている。ずぶぬれになっちゃうよ。



★It never rains but it pours.　「降れば土砂降り」
　　　↓
「2度あることは3度ある」「泣き面に蜂」

◆Suddenly, it started pouring down.

　突然、どしゃ降りになってね。

過去形のイメージは「遠く離れた」。現在と隔絶した感触を基調とします。



過去形の「遠く離れた」は、3つの「過去を表さない過去形」の使い方を生み出します。

◆まずは、丁寧表現の例

I hoped you could lend me some money.

いくらかお金を貸していただけないかと思うのですが。

丁寧さは、依頼内容などから距離を取るところから生まれます。
I hope you can ～ と現在形を使えば、現在の希望を述べることになり、生々しい印象を与えます。
ですが、過去形を使えば距離感が生まれ、丁寧な印象となるわけです。

So, what’s the exact feeling accompanied with this sentence?

Well, for me, I would accompany it with the gesture of, you know, ？？？ your hands up to your chest and “I hoped you could lend me some money.”
It’s almost like begging.
How do you feel, Rosa?

Well, like you said to 先生, it really has that feeling of going around what you really want to say, making it longer, so that you don’t seem so forward, “I hoped you could lend me some money,” like that.

　　↓
正解は　clasping your hands up to your chest
　　↓
★clasp one’s hands
　指を組み合わせて両手を握り締める（◆祈り・絶望などのしぐさ）


★ローザさんが今回使った forward は
「厚かましい、ずうずうしい」という意味かと思われる。



胸の前で手を組んで「おねが～い」っていう感じがするわけです。
そうした感じを感じ取っていただけると素敵かな？と思います。



◆助動詞の過去形が表す控えめなニュアンス

David could fix it.
デイヴィッドなら直せるんじゃないかな。

can を使ったなら
「デイヴィッドは直せるよ」と強い確信を意味しますが、
could でその強さから距離を取り、
「できるんじゃないかな」と控えめな表現となっているわけです。



◆仮定法

If I had a car, I could go to many places.
もし車を持っていたら、たくさんの場所に行けるのに。

仮定法は、「可能性がない・著しく低い」ことを表す形
現在そうではない状況について「もし～なら」と述べたいなら、過去形が使われます。


仮定法に過去形が使われるのは、やはり「距離感」です。
現実離れした、現実から乖離した感触、
それが過去形によって表現されているというわけです。

もし英語を話すのがもっと上手だったら、国際的な会社で働けるのになぁ。
If I spoke better English, I could get a job in an international company.



Chris, this is subjunctive, isn’t it?
That’s right.
But we can’t avoid learning subjunctive.
And on top of that, you know, for native speakers, it comes out so naturally, so I think, you know, learners should relax about it, just like it would flow, it’s just like the past tense after all.

That’s right.
You don’t have to focus too hard on it, but kind of try to get the feel of what it’s like.

やはりですね、仮定法の学習というのは避けることが出来ないんじゃないかと私が言ったら、native speaker たちは「日常会話で気軽に使っているんだ、ただの過去形じゃん、気軽に作ってごらんよ」そうしたことをおっしゃっていただけた、というわけです。
