2020年9月30日(水)のおぼえた日記

Ueda describes meeting a person with a now unusual job title.
And Grace says such staff was used to run their offices.
Salmans agrees, saying the work they used to do is now seen only in old movies.
Grace describes the decline of the so-called “pink-color” career path for women.
A trend that Salmans says has gone largely unnoticed.

You're one of the last of a vanishing breed.
http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/242569
「あなたは、消えゆくタイプのほとんど最後の人なのだから」って。

◆Guess what? 聞いてください。 何だと思いますか?

Heather さん:
What I’m about to say will surprise you, Ueda means.
Such as “Guess what? Carl’s been transferred to a palace.”
It’s also common to use this sarcastically, when we’re going to say something that isn’t surprising at all.
Imagine a coworker who’s always late.
One day, there was an important meeting and guess what? She was late.

You know what? とも言いますね。

Guess what?
http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/105100
ねえ、ちょっと聞いてよ。

And also, guess what?
http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/187898
そしてさらに、何があったと思いますか?

You know what? She will get married to John.
http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/5021
ねえ知ってる? 彼女、ジョンと結婚するんだって。
   ↓
★You know what? は話しを切り出すときの決まり文句。
 「あのさ」や「思うんだけど~」というようなニュアンスにも近い。

You know what? I think you should get your eyes checked!
http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/252493
あのね、君は目を検査してもらう必要があると思うよ!

◆bona fide [ bóunə fàid ] 正真正銘の、本物の、真実の

◆job title 仕事の肩書、職名

◆executive assistant エグゼクティブの補佐役

杉田先生:
executive というのは、ちょっと長いですね。
略して exec と言うこともあります。

◆it isn’t every day ~ or it isn’t every day that ~ ~はめったにない

Heather さん:
Grace says “It isn’t every day you meet an executive assistant or administrative assistant.”
Grace is saying this is rare, it’s not common.
Like, “It isn’t every day you meet a famous politician.”
And you can say it’s not every day as well.
It’s not every day you meet a famous politician.

Grace が言っていますね「エグゼクティブ・アシスタントやアドミニストレイティブ・アシスタントにお目にかかることは滅多にないですからね。」
Grace は「これは稀なことだ、一般的ではない」と言っているのです。
例えば「有名な政治家に会うことは滅多にない」
または it’s not every day ~ と言ってもかまいません。
It’s not every day you meet a famous politician. とも言えます。

◆dying breed 絶滅しかけている種

Heather さん:
We also say “vanishing breed”.
Ah, they both use the image of an animal that’s going to extinct, disappearing from the world.
You could say “She still writes letters by hand. She is one of the dying breed.”

または vanishing breed(消えゆく種)とも言います。
これらのフレーズは両方とも、この世から絶滅しつつある動物、姿を消しつつある動物のイメージを使用しています。
例えば「彼女の書く手紙は、いまだに手書きです。 彼女のような人は今ではいなくなりつつあります」

◆take dictation 言葉を書き取る、口述筆記をする

杉田先生:
中ほどで Chuck Salmans が言っていましたね。
Yes, executive secretaries would take dictation from an executive.
「ええ、役員秘書はエグゼクティブの口述を筆記したものです」

Heather さん:
Write down what someone says as they say it.
Afterwards you would usually prepare those words in a letter, some other form.
We also have the verb “dictate”, which means say something for another person to take down.
Executives used to dictate letters to their secretaries.

ある人が話している最中に話している内容を書き留めること。
その後、口述筆記で書き取った言葉を手紙や他の書式に書き込む、というのが通常的なやり方でした。
また、dictate という動詞もありますが、これは他者に書き取らせるための内容を語ることを意味します。
エグゼクティブは、かつてはよく秘書に手紙を口述筆記させたものです。

杉田先生:
dictation というのは「書取り練習」のことですね。

◆timesaving 時間節約のための

Heather さん:
Lyons says “A lot of the timesaving work that executive assistants traditionally took care of can now be done much quicker by a computer.”
This refers to things that save time.
Executives would save time by having their assistants to prepare the letters.
Nowadays we have timesaving apps and such.
I’ve also read about timesaving workouts, you know, meaning exercise that people can get done quickly.

◆on one’s own 1人で、独力で、自力で

◆decline 減少、落ち込み

杉田先生:
Grace が言っていましたね
That’s a decline of almost 40 percent.
「これはほぼ40%の減少ですよ」
