◆across the U.S.  全米の、全米で


Heather さん:
Throughout the U.S. in many different places.
“Company X has outlets across the nation”, for example.
Or to use a variation, “He has relatives around the U.S.”


アメリカ中のいたる所で。
例えば「X社は全国の至るところにアウトレット店(小売直売店)がある」
または、ちょっと形を変えたフレーズを使って「彼はアメリカ中に親戚がいる」など。





◆get one’s news from ~  ~からニュースを得る


Heather さん:
McMillan says “Young people don’t get their news from the paper anymore.”
This is the source of a person’s news.
In the vignette’s case, the newspaper.
Likewise, you could say, “I get most of my news from TV.”
Or “A lot of young people get their news through social media now.”
And, of course, you can substitute other things for news
Ah, “I got my information from Tom”, for example.

 ★substitute A for B  AをBの代わりに使う、AをBの代用にする

McMillan が言っていますね「若い人たちはもう神の新聞からニュースを得ていません」
これは、ある人にとっての情報源のことです。
今回のビニエットの場合、それは新聞になります。
同じような例として「私は、ほとんどのニュースをテレビから得ます」
または「今の若い人たちはソーシャル・メディアからニュースを得ます」など。
もちろん他のものを news の代わりに使うこともできます。
例えば「私の情報源はトムです」など。

◆be broken  ニュースが報道される


Heather さん:
Ueda says “News can be broken nearly the second it happens.”
In this case, “broken” means “be released”, a new story is put out to the public, public sees it.
“The story was broken last night. That executive has been accused of fraud.”
Or you could say, “The story broke last night.”
And news bulletins often read with breaking news.
So, we might see it tweet someday.
“Breaking news, a pack of red pandas has escaped from the zoo and are terrorizing local residents.”

 ★bulletin [ búlitən ] ラジオ・テレビの短いニュース、短い特集記事

上田が言っていますね「ニュースになる出来事が起きると、すぐに報じることができます」
この場合 broken は「公表される」という意味です。新しい出来事が世間に公開され、その情報を大衆は知ることになる、ということ。
「そのニュースは昨晩報じられた。その会社役員は詐欺罪で告訴された」
または The story broke last night. と(能動形で)言うこともできます。
また短いニュース特集がニュース速報で読まれることも多いです。
そのうち、いつの日かツイッターでニュースを目にするようになるかもしれませんね。
「ニュース速報です。レッサーパンダの一群が動物園から逃げ出して、地元住民を脅かしています」

杉田先生:
英米のテレビ番組を見ていると、画面に breaking news というふうに出てくることがありますね。「今起こっているニュースです」という意味ですね。
それから be broke と言うと、違う意味になりますね。「一文無し」です。

We also use ink as a verb, ah, to mean sign contracts and other such documents, you know, reach a deal.
“We inked a deal to share technology with Company X.”

 ★reach a deal  取引を成立させる、合意に至る、協定を結ぶ

ink を動詞として使うこともあります。契約書やその他の書類にサインする、契約を成立させる、といった意味です。
「我が社は、X社と技術提携の協定を結んだ」





◆blame  ~のせいにする、~を責める


Heather さん:
Lyons says “You can also blame the decline in literacy.”

Lyons が言っていますね「読み書き能力の低下も一因だと言えますね」

◆harsh truth  厳しい事実


Heather さん:
A fact that is unpleasant, you know, we don’t like to hear it but it’s the truth, it can’t be denied.
Things like “The harsh truth is, ah, customers hate this product.”
Or “The harsh truth is she can’t do this job. We have to dismiss her.”


不愉快な事実のこと。聞きたくはないが真実であること。否定できないこと。
例えば「厳しい事実だが、この製品が嫌いである」
または「厳しい事実ですが、彼女はこの仕事をすることができません。我が社は彼女を解雇せざるを得ません」


杉田先生:
日本語でも「不都合な真実」なんていう言い方をしますね。
英語では inconvenient truth というふうに言います。





◆attention span  集中力・注意が持続する時間
