◆concentrate on ～　　～に集中する、～に注意を向ける


Heather さん：
Keep one’s focus on something, ah, devote our attention or our effort to do it.
Such as “I can’t concentrate on my work.　Could someone turn the music off?”
Or “I’m going to concentrate on this project today.　I’ll do that translation tomorrow.”


あることに集中し続けること、それをするために注意や努力を捧げること。
例えば「私、仕事に集中できないんだけど。誰かその音楽を止めてくれる？」
または「今日はこのプロジェクトに集中したいから、あの翻訳は明日やります」など。





◆go the way of the dodo　　絶滅する、廃れる、時代遅れになる


Heather さん：
The dodo was a flightless bird on the island of Mauritius.
It’s extinct now.
Ah, its name comes from a Portuguese word that means silly, stupid.
And so now, we say this to mean something will go extinct, become obsolete.
“Video tape players have essentially gone the way of the dodo.”
And you could put other words at the end, too,
Like, you could say something has gone the way of the horse and buggy, because no one rides around in horses and buggies anymore.

　★obsolete　[ ὰbsəlíːt ]　古臭い、時代遅れの

ドードーはモーリシャス島にいた飛べない鳥でした。
今は絶滅しています。
その名前は「バカな、愚かな」という意味のポルトガル語の単語から来ています。
というわけで今では、あるものが絶滅しそうである、時代遅れになった、という意味でこのフレーズを使います。
「ビデオカセットプレーヤーは、本質的には廃れてしまったと言える」
また、このフレーズの末尾を別の言葉に置き換えて使うこともできます。
同様な意味で、例えば、あるものが馬車のように時代遅れになった、ということができます。なぜなら、もはや馬車を乗り回すことなど誰もしなくなったからです。





◆lose one’s edge　　優位性を失う


Heather さん：
In this case, edge is an advantage, a better position.
So, “Due to our financial problems, we lost our edge in the negotiations.”
So, the other side knows the one’s trouble, and therefore they’re negotiating from a stronger position.


この場合、edge とは優位性のこと、より良いポジションのことです。
例えば、財政的な問題のせいで、我々は交渉において優位性を失った。
つまり、相手方はこちらの困難な状況を知っており、したがって相手方のほうが強い立場で交渉している、ということです。


杉田先生：
edge というのは、刃物の「刃」のことですね。
raiser's edge などと使いますね。
刃物の切れ味のことも edge と言います。
それから「人を刺激する鋭い感覚」という意味でも使います。
日本語でも「エッジのきいた」という言い方をしますね。
「エッジのきいたデザイン」といったような言い方を耳にします。





◆”qwerty” keyboard　　QWERTY配列のキーボード


These days, children are taught how to properly use the "qwerty" keyboard, and so professional typists have lost their edge.

最近では、子供たちがQWERTY配列のキーボードの正しい使い方を教わっているので、プロのタイピストはその優位性を失いました。





1.　　a thing of the past　「過去のもの、今は存在しないもの」


A thing of the past is that doesn’t happen or isn’t in use anymore.
For example, “Slide rules are a thing of the past.”


a thing of the past は、もう起こらない、あるいは、もう使われない。
例えば「計算尺は過去のものだ」など。





2.　　blame　「～のせいにする、～を責める」


Holding someone responsible for a bad occurrence or situation is to blame them.
As in “He always blames everyone but himself when things go wrong.”


悪い出来事や悪い状況の責任を人に負わせることが、その人を blame することである。
例えば「物事がうまくいかない時、彼はいつも自分以外の人たちのせいにする」のように。

3.　　attention span　「集中力が持続する時間」


The length of time that a person can concentrate on something is their attention span.
Such as “Little children often have a very short attention span.”


人があることに集中していられる時間の長さが、その人の attention span である。
例えば「幼い子供はたいてい集中できる時間が非常に短い」といったように。
