Grace は、音声認識ソフトの進歩によって、タイピストという職業はおそらくなくなる羽目になるだろう、と言っています。
そして上田の予想では、人々が自分で自分の休暇を手配できるウェブサイトのおかげで、旅行代理店も姿を消すだろうとのことです。
McMillan は、レジ係や銀行の窓口係といった職業もその存在を脅かされていると言っており、上田は自動運転車がタクシーやリモの運転手から職を奪うだろうといった予想を語っています。





◆make a living　　生計を立てる


Heather さん：
Earn enough money to support one’s life, ah, to pay for one’s needs.
“She makes a living as a freelance translator and editor.”
Or “It’s hard to make a living as a singer.　Very few people are successful enough to pay the bills just through singing.”


生活を支えるのに十分なお金を稼ぐこと、必要なものへの支払いに足るお金を稼ぐこと。
「彼女は、フリーランスの翻訳家や編集者で生計を立てている」
または「歌手で生計を立てるのは難しい。歌だけで生活できるほど成功する人はごくまれだ」など。


杉田先生：
「何とかして生計を立てる」という意味では、make の代わりに eke out というフレーズを使いますね。eke [ íːk ]、e-k-e とつづります。





◆advance in ～　　～の進歩


Heather さん：
In this case, advance is a noun, meaning progress, ah, motion forward.
“There have been huge advances in medicine in the last hundred years”, for example.
Or “This car represents a significant advance in autonomous driving.”


今回の場合　advance は、進歩、前に進むことを意味する名詞として使われています。
例えば「ここ100年で医学は大幅に進歩した」
または「この車は、自動運転の著しい進歩を象徴している」など。




◆voice-recognition software　　音声認識ソフト


Heather さん：
Software that recognizes a person’s voice and performs certain tasks in response.
My smartphone has voice-recognition software, you know, I can tell it to search for things, ah, turn on certain apps, that sort of business.


人の声を認識し、人の声に反応して何らかの作業を行うソフトウェアのこと。
私のスマートフォンは音声認識ソフトが入っており、スマートフォンに向かって声に出して命令すると、検索を行なったり、音声で何らかのアプリを起動させたり、といったことができます。





◆be out of a job　　失職している、失業している


Heather さん：
Be unemployed, ah, have lost one’s job.
Imagine an employee who he put up a racist joke on social media and soon found himself out of a job.

　★racist　　人種差別的な、人種差別主義の

職についていない、仕事を失ってしまった、ということ。
ソーシャルメディアに人種差別的ジョークをアップしたところ、間を置かずに職を失う羽目になった従業員を想像してみてください。


杉田先生：
「失業している」という言い方、他にもいろいろありますね。
unemployed・jobless・out of work、あるいは collecting unemployment benefits, without gainful employment といったフレーズがあります。
婉曲的には between jobs というフレーズも使います。次の仕事が見つかるまでの「仕事と仕事の合間」という感じですね。
それから「失業している」ということをはっきり言いたくない時には、
I'm on an extended vacation. とかですね、I'm on sabbatical. あるいは I've decided to explore a new horizon. などとも言います。





◆on the endangered species list　　絶滅危惧種リストに載っている


But pensions are on the endangered species list, and Social Security will likely be cut back a lot.

◆shop around
　買う前に品物を見て回る、あれこれ比較検討する


Heather さん：
Sometimes we use this expression not just about shopping for items for purchases, ah, but about human relations.
People would say “Come on, you have to shop around for you choose your life partner, for you get married whatever.”


ただ単に買い物をすることを言う時に使うだけでなく、人間関係について言う時にもこのフレーズを使うことがあります。
例えば「さあ、自分の人生のパートナーを選ぶために、何であれ結婚するためには、あれこれ比較検討しなくちゃいけないわ」など。




 
◆dedicated　　専用の、特定の目的用の


Heather さん：
Devoted to a certain purpose.
I’ve heard about a dedicated page on a website, for example, meaning that page, that area of a website focuses on a certain subject.
There’s a dedicated page about this software, for example, with tutorials on how to use it.
I’ve also seen our dedicated servers.

　　《コンピュータ》チュートリアル
　　コンピュータやソフトウェアの使い方を教えるプログラム

特定の目的に特化していること。
例えば、私はウェブサイト上の専用的なページについて耳にしたことがあります。つまり、あるサイトのページ、エリアでは特定の話題を重点的に取り扱っている、ということ。
例えば「このソフトウェアの使用方法をチュートリアルが教えてくれる専用のページがある」など。
また、私は自社の専用サーバを見たことがあります。





◆cashier　　レジ係


杉田先生：
McMillan が言っていましたね。
Cashiers and bank tellers are also high on the list.
「レジ係や銀行の窓口係も、このリストの上位にありますね」
the list というのは、前に出てきた endangered species list のことですね。





◆bank teller　　銀行の窓口・出納係


Or they're replacing assembly-line workers and bank tellers.

◆be high on the list　　リストの上位にある


Heather さん：
Be high up in some kind of ranking.
Ah, in this case, the ranking of jobs most likely to disappear in the future.
And we can use this expression about good rankings as well as bad.
Like, “That company is high on the list of employee satisfaction.”
Or to use a slight variation, “Carl is very high on our list of candidates for the job.”


ある種のランキングにおいて高い位置にあること。
今回のケースでは、将来なくなる可能性の高い仕事のランキングのことですね。
そして、このフレーズは悪いリストだけでなく良いリストについても使うことができます。
例えば「あの会社は、従業員の満足度リストの上位にあります」
または、ちょっと形を変えたバリエーションを使って「カールはその仕事の候補者リストのまさに上位にいます」など。


杉田先生：
「リストの上位にある」ということですが、
「リストの1番にある」と言う場合には top the list というフレーズを使いますね。
それから be high のあとに人を入れて
I’m high on her.
「私は彼女を高く評価している」という意味になります。
