◆referee　　レフェリー、審判、審判員


Heather さん：
Ueda is talking about a sports referee, someone who makes sure the rules are followed and makes decisions, you know, during a game or competition of some kind.
We also use referee metaphorically in non-sports situations, and use it as a verb as well as a noun.
Things like “John joined the meeting as a referee of sorts to make sure everyone stayed polite.”
Or “Ah, John, would you mind refereeing this discussion?”

　★of sorts　　ある種の、一種の、ちょっとした

上田はスポーツの審判員のことを言っていますね。ルールを遵守させたり、何らかの試合や競技会の際に決定を下す人のことです。
また referee をスポーツ以外の状況で比喩的に使うこともありますし、名詞だけでなく動詞として使うこともあります。
例えば「ジョンは、全員がきちんと節度を守って参加するよう、ある種のレフェリーとして会議に参加した」
または「あっ、ジョン、この議論の審判をしていただけませんか？」





◆needless to say　　言うまでもなく、もちろん


Heather さん：
Obviously, of course.
If Ueda had become a referee, he obviously wouldn’t be there at A＆A talking about vanishing professions.
Some people object to this expression.
Ah, they argue if it’s needless to say, then why are someone saying it?
Personally, I don’t mind it, ah, but I would be careful about using it too much.


「見てわかるように、もちろん」ということ。
もし上田が審判員になっていたら、今頃は、ここA＆Aで消えゆく職業についてしゃべってはいないことは明らかでしょうね。
このフレーズを使うことに異論を述べる人たちもいます。
もし「言うまでもない」ことなら、なぜ人はそれを口にしているのか？と、彼らは論じているわけです。
個人的には、私（Heatherさん）は気にせずこのフレーズを使ってはいますが、使い過ぎには気をつけるようにしています。


杉田先生：
他にも例えば as I said before とかですね as you know、こういう言葉を頻繁に使うと、ちょっと相手を見下しているように聞こえる危険性がある、と言われています。
それから、他にも to be honest、こういうフレーズも気をつけなければいけない。
「いつもは嘘ついてるけれども、今ほんとのことを言うと」というふうに聞こえる可能性がある、ということですね。





◆video assistant referee system　ビデオ・アシスタント・レフェリー制度


杉田先生：
これは、サッカーなどのスポーツの試合でビデオによって審判員の判定を補佐する制度のことですね。


Heather さん：
Ueda says that sport is increasingly using video assistant referee systems instead of human referees.


上田は、そのスポーツ（サッカー）は人間の審判の代わりにビデオ・アシスタント・レフェリー制度を使うことが増えている、と言っています。






◆school of thought
　ある特定の考えを持った人たち・グループ・学派・流派


杉田先生：
中ほどで McMillan が言っていました。
One school of thought says this is a positive move.
「この制度は前向きな動きだ、と言っている人たちがいます」


Heather さん：
A certain philosophy, a certain way of thinking.
For example, one school of thought recommends high tariffs on foreign goods, but another school of thought says “No, no, free trade should be promoted forever possible.”


ある種の哲学、ある種の考え方のこと。
例えば「外国製品に高い関税をかけることを推奨する人たちもいれば、『 いやいや、自由貿易こそ可能な限り永続的に推し進めるべきだ 』という人たちもいます。」など。





◆eliminate the chance of human error
　ヒューマンエラー・人為的ミスの可能性をなくす


Heather さん：
Completely get rid of human error, you know, wipe it out.
“She has eliminated caffeine from her daily diet”, for example.
Or “This organization is working to eliminate polio around the world.”
？？？ you may have heard the expression, ah, to err is human.
I once saw a little sign on a company person’s desk that’s said, “To err is human, to forgive is not our policy.”

　★polio = poliomyelitis　[ póuliòu màiəláitis ]　脊髄性小児麻痺、ポリオ

人為的エラーを完全に取り除くこと、一掃すること。
例えば「彼女は日々の食事からカフェインを排除した」
または「この組織は世界中のポリオをなくすために活動している」など。
？？？「過ちは人の常」というフレーズを聞いたことがあるかもしれません。
会社のある人の机の上に[「過つは人の常、許すは我が社の方針ではない」と書いてあった小さな貼り紙を見たことがあります。




◆point out　　～を指摘する




◆be subject to ～　　～次第である


Heather さん：
Here, subject means be guided or controlled by something.
So, rules are not absolute black-and-white.
They’re influenced strongly by different people’s interpretations.
Likewise, you could say, “Our picnic plans are subject to the weather. Ah, if it rains or it’s very windy, we will have to cancel.”

　★interpretation　　 解釈、判断

ここでは subject は、あるものに誘導される、または、あるものにコントロールされるという意味です。
そうですね、ルールとは必ずしも白黒のはっきりついた単純なものではありません。
さまざまな人たちの解釈に強く影響されます。
同様に、例えば「私たちのピクニックの計画はお天気次第です。まぁ、雨が降ったり、または風がすごく強い日だったら、中止しなければならないでしょう」





◆U.S. Postal Service　　米国郵政公社


Heather さん：
Salmans says “Positions with the U.S. Postal Service were once held up as prime examples of stable middle-class jobs with good benefits.”


Salmans が言っていますね「米国郵政公社での仕事は、かつては給付が手厚くて、中産階級にとって安定した仕事の典型例でした」





◆be held up as ～　　模範例などとして挙げられる・示される


Heather さん：
Be used as an example of something, be pointed to as an example.
“This company has been held up as a model for entrepreneurs.”
Or “This index is often held up as a model for the overall economy.”


あるものの例として使用されること、例として示されること。
「この会社は起業家の模範例として紹介されたことがある」
または「この指数は、経済全体の模範的な基準としてよく引き合いに出される」

◆change drastically　　抜本的に変わる、激変する


Heather さん：
Change in a very significant way, become very different.
“Mobile phones have changed drastically over the twenty years.”
Or “He’s changed drastically since he started exercising regularly.　He’s much more cheerful and calm now.”


非常に著しく変化すること、まったく別なふうになること。
「携帯電話は、この20年間で劇的に変化した」
または「彼は、定期的に運動をするようになってから、がらりと変わった。今では、以前よりもずっと明るくなり、落ち着きがでてきた。」
