◆hardcore handwasher 徹底して手洗いをする人

Heather さん:
If someone is hardcore, they’re extremely devoted to something, are very passionate about it and they’re unlikely to give it up.
I’m a hardcore movie fan, as I’m sure you know.
I love to read about movie history, I watch movies almost every day.
And though it wasn’t in my dictionaries, I’ve seen hardcore used to mean tough, punishing.
Like, “This is a hardcore exercise plan, ah, very hard to keep up.”

◆to be honest 正直なところ、実は

Heather さん:
Alvarez says “To be honest, at first I wondered how such a simple, low-tech thing like washing your hands could make a significant difference.”

Alvarez が言っていますね「正直なところ、最初のうちは私は、手を洗うというようなとても簡単でローテクなことが、どうやって大きな効果をもたらしうるのだろうか、と不思議に思っていました」

◆low-tech ローテクな、低度技術の

Heather さん:
Not involving high-technology or advanced technology.
We often use the term “analogue” in the situations, too.
“I wondered how such a simple analogue thing like washing your hands.”
You could also say “This is a good low-tech way to fight garden pests.”
Or “This is a good low-tech way to increase productivity.”

Heather さん:
The suffix, ah, -wise is often used to mean in terms of, or with respect to.
Such as “Location-wise, this is a great place for the party. It’s right near the office.”
Or “Tomorrow is not great time-wise. Could we hold the meeting on Thursday instead?”

 ★suffix 接尾辞

接尾辞 -wise は in terms of「~の観点から」または、with respect to「~について言うと」という意味でよく使われる。
例えば「場所的に言って、ここはパーティにもってこいの場所だ。オフィスのすぐ近くにあるし」
または「明日は時間的に都合が悪いので、代わりに木曜日にミーティングを行いませんか?」

◆spread 広がる、広げる

Heather さん:
In this case, spread is a verb, and refers to a disease moving from one person to another.
We also use it as a noun.
The government is trying to stem the spread of the disease.
We also say a disease is spread by, or spread through, indicating the manner of transmission.
“The disease is spread by close personal contact.”
Or in other case, you might say “The disease spread through contaminated drinking water.”

Heather さん:
Vital, critical, extremely important.
It’s crucial to plan ahead, you might say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
Or “Our report is missing some crucial data. We need to put data in.”

★An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
  http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/18550
  直訳「1オンスの予防は1ポンドの治療に匹敵する」
       ↓
  百の治療より一の予防

vital「肝要な」・critical「決定的に重大な」・極めて重要である。
事前に計画することは極めて重要です。言うならば「百の治療より1の予防」ですよね。
または「我々のレポートには決定打となるデータが欠けています。データを追加しなくては」

◆make a difference 「効果がある、違いが生じる、重要である」

To be honest, at first I wondered how such a simple, low-tech thing like washing your hands could make a significant difference health-wise.
http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/259276
正直なところ、最初のうちは私は、手を洗うというようなとても簡単でローテクなことが、どうやって健康面に大きな効果をもたらしうるのだろうか、と不思議に思っていました。

Well, if you could add some behind-the-scenes stories, that would make a difference.
http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/105582
そうですね、舞台裏の話を少し加えられると、違いが出てくると思います。

So it does make a difference and we can save lots of money to boot.
http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/2575
だからとても大切なことだし、おまけにお金だって節約できるわ。

In fact, I've written a book which talks about how they can make a difference as artists in society.
http://gogakuru.com/english/phrase/17781
実際、私は著作の中で、芸術家が社会にどう影響を与えていけるのかについて述べています。
