◆infected　　汚染された、感染した


Heather さん：
Contaminated with the bacteria, virus, some kind of infecting agent.
They were found to be infected and put into quarantine, for example.
Or computers get infected with a virus.
The adjective, ah, is infectious.
Chicken pox is an infectious disease, ah, so is the measles.

　★infecting agent　　　　感染性病原体、感染菌
　★put into quarantine　　隔離する
　★measles　[ míːzlz ]　　はしか、麻疹（ましん）

細菌やウィルス、なんらかの感染性病原体に汚染された状態。
例えば「彼らは感染していることが判明し、隔離された」
または「コンピュータがあるウィルスに汚染された」
形容詞は infectious です。
水疱瘡は感染症です、はしかも同じです。

「水疱瘡」のことです。





◆menace　　脅威


Heather さん：
Lyons says “Most of us knew about the menace of eating food infected with E. coli bacteria.”


Lyons が言っていますね「病原性大腸菌に汚染された食品を食べることの危険性については、ほとんどの人が知っていました」




◆E. coli　[ íː kóulai ]　大腸菌

　Escherichia coli　[ èʃəríkiə kóulai ] の略





◆be tainted with a virus　　ウィルスに汚染される


Heather さん：
Again, ah, be contaminated with a virus.
Ah, tainted means polluted, ah, dirtied.
Something could be tainted with lead, for example, or tainted with mercury.
Drinking water could be tainted with toxic chemicals.

　★lead　　　[ léd ]　　　　　鉛　　　発音に注意！！
　★mercury　[ mə́ːrkjuri ]　水銀

また出てきましたね、ウィルスに汚染されている、ということ。
tainted は polluted（汚染される）、dirtied（汚される）という意味です。
例えば「鉛に汚染されている可能性がある、または水銀に汚染されている可能性がある」
「飲料水は、有毒な化学物質に汚染されている可能性がある」など。





◆limit　　制限する、限定する


Heather さん：
Restrict, keep to a certain number or level.
I try to limit the number of diet sodas I drink each day.　I try but I fail.
We also say “be limited to”, which means we are restricted to some amount or some level.
Things like “They’re limited to two breaks a day.”


制限すること、ある一定の数まで、または、ある一定のレベルまでに抑えること。
私は毎日飲むダイエット・ソーダの本数を制限しようとしていますが、トライしても失敗に終わります。
be limited to とも言います。これは、ある量、または、あるレベルまでに制限されることを意味します。
例えば「彼らの休憩は1日につき2回までに制限されている」





◆yours truly　　「私、私自身」


Many people―including yours truly―no longer shake hands when they meet someone.

多くの人たちは、私を含めてですが、人に会った時に握手はもうしませんね。


Wow, this new policy is going to be a bitter pill for many people to swallow, including yours truly.

うわー、この新しい方針は、私にとってもそうですが、多くの人にとって耐えなければならない嫌なことでしょうね。






1.　make it a rule to do　「～することにしている」


When we make it a rule to do something, we always do that thing.
As in “He makes it a rule to read the newspaper every morning.”


あることを make it a rule to do である時には、常にそのことをする。
例えば「彼は毎朝新聞を読むことにしている」のように。





2.　menace　「脅威」


Another way to say threat or danger is menace.
For example, “The government is trying to protect students from the menace of drug abuse.”


threat（脅威）やdanger（危険）の別の言い方が menace である。
例えば「政府は、薬物乱用の脅威から学生たちを守ろうとしている」など。





3.　yours truly　「私、私自身」


The expression “yours truly” can mean me, myself.
For example, “You’ll never believe who’s going to publish a book.　Yours truly!”


yours truly という表現は、私、私自身を意味することがある。
例えば「誰が本を出版しようとしているのか、あなたは決して信じないでしょうね。私なの！」というように。











Ueda says people in Japan bow instead of shaking hands, and McMillan comments on the way people he knew were pecking each other on the cheek.
Lyons gives an example of how people can explain why they don’t want to shake hands, and McMillan describes a number of measures being taken by businesses.
Alvarez says she always has a mask handy.


日本では握手の代わりにお辞儀をしている、と上田は言っており、またMcMillan は、彼の知り合いがどんなふうに頬に軽くキスする挨拶をしていたかについてコメントしています。
Lyons は、握手をしたがらない理由を角を立てずに言うにはどう説明したらいいのか、その一例を挙げていますし、McMillan は、現在あちこちの店舗で行われている対策について、いくつか述べています。
Alvarez は、自分はいつもマスクを手元に持っている、と語っています。





◆be home to ～　　～が存在する、～の本拠地である


Heather さん：
Certain things or people reside in a certain place, they can be found there.
Things like “This city is home to many Italian-Americans.”
Or “This area is home to many ceramic manufacturers.”

　★reside　[ rizáid ]　　reside in ～　「～の中にある・存在する」

ある種の物または人が一定の場所に存在していること、そこに行けば、それらを目にすることができるということ。
例えば「この都市にはイタリア系アメリカ人が多く居住している」
または「この地域は、セラミック製造会社の多くが拠を構えている」
