◆don’t get me started on ～
　私に～について言わせないでほしい
　私に～の話を始めさせないでほしい


Heather さん：
McMillan says “And don’t get me started on the embarrassingly messy peck-on-the-cheek greeting that some of my colleagues and acquaintances had embraced.”
We use this when we mean “Oh, there’s a lot I could say on that subject”, you know, if we talk about that subject, our conversation could go on for a while, I would say more than you want to hear.
You might say “Oh, don’t get me started about the new work schedule.　I hate it.”
Or to use a slight variation, “Don’t get Louis started about politics.　He’ll talk all day.”


McMillan が言っていますね「それに、頬への軽いキスという、気恥ずかしくなるほど面倒な挨拶を好んでしていた同僚や知り合いがいますが、私にその話をさせないでほしいのですよ」
このフレーズは、「ああ、そのことに関しては、私は言いたいことがたくさんある」つまり、そのことをいったん話題にしたら、会話がしばらくの間、延々と続きかねない、あなたが聞きたいと思う以上に私はしゃべるだろう、という意味で使います。
例えば「ああ、もう新しい仕事のスケジュールの話を私にふるのはやめて。その話はしたくない」
または、ちょっと形を変えて「ルイスに政治の話をさせるのはやめとけ。やつは1日中その話をするぞ」


杉田先生：
そうですね、その話について私は言いたいことがいっぱいあるので、話し始めると止まらないかもわからないから、そのことについて私に言わせないでほしい、といったようなニュアンスで使いますね。






◆embarrassingly messy　　気恥ずかしくなるほど厄介な


Heather さん：
Messy in a way that’s embarrassing or to a degree that’s embarrassing.
McMillan probably means messy because people were getting saliva on each other, which is certainly something we’re avoiding now.
You could also say, ah, embarrassingly sentimental, or embarrassingly unprofessional.
Anything that makes people feel “Oh, this is so embarrassing and uncomfortable.”


恥ずかしい思いをさせるくらい厄介な、気まずくなるほど厄介な、ということ。
おそらく McMillan が意味する messy とは、お互いに唾を吐き合っていたため、今では自分たちが明らかに避けているもののことを指していると思われる。
また、次のような表現を使うこともできますね。
embarrassingly sentimental（恥ずかしくなるほど感傷的な）
embarrassingly unprofessional（プロと名乗るのもおこがましいくらい未熟な）
「ああっ、これってすごく恥ずかしいし、居心地が悪い」と人に感じさせるもののことです。


杉田先生：
今 Heather さんが saliva [ səláivə ] って言っていましたね。
綴りは s-a-l-i-v-a です。「唾液、つば」のことですね。





◆peck-on-the-cheek greeting　　頬に軽くキスする挨拶


Heather さん：
A peck is a light first kiss like a bird pecking at someone or something with their beak.
Before the pandemic, you might have said, “I always give my grandma a peck on the cheek when I see her.”
Or “He gave his daughter a peck on the cheek as he left.”

　★beak　[ bíːk ]　（猛鳥のかぎ型にとがった）くちばし
　　( 水鳥などの細長く扁平なものは bill )

　★peck at ～　　（鳥がえさなどを）つつく、ついばむ

peck とは、鳥が嘴で人あるいは物をついばむような、最初に交わす軽いキスのことです。
コロナ・パンデミックが流行る前なら、「私、お祖母ちゃんに会う時は、いつも頬に軽くキスをするようにしてるの」といったような会話もあったでしょうね。
または「彼は出かける時、娘の頬に軽くキスをした」





◆embrace　　信奉する、考え・意見などを受け入れる


One of my associates took me to a trendy upmarket bar in London that has embraced sustainability and zero waste.

仕事仲間の1人が、ロンドンの今はやりの高級バーに連れていってくれたのですが、そこは、サステナビリティと廃棄物ゼロという考え方を取り入れていました。





◆for fear of infection　　感染を恐れて


杉田先生：
上田が言っていましたね
But tell me, what should you say when you don’t want to shake hands with someone for fear of infection?
「でも、教えて下さい、感染を恐れて人と握手をしたくない時には、何と言うべきでしょうか？」


Heather さん：
For fear of is because we’re afraid something might happen, because we want to prevent it from happening.
Imagine we suspect a coworker of embezzlement, but we initially keep quiet for fear of being wrong.
Or “She didn’t report the harassment for fear of retaliation.”

　★embezzlement　[ imbézlmənt ] 　使い込み、横領
　★retaliation　　　[ ritæ̀liéiʃən ]　 仕返し、報復

for fear of とは、何かが起こるかもしれないと恐れているために、それが起こるのを防ぎたいと思っているために、ということ。
同僚の横領を疑っているところを想像してみて下さい。疑ってはいるけど、最初のうちは誤解かもしれないと恐れて口をつぐみますよね。
または「彼女は報復を恐れて、その嫌がらせを報告しなかった」





◆CDC = Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
　アメリカの疾病予防管理センター


Heather さん：
Lyons suggests saying something like “Excuse me for not shaking your hand, but I’m following the CDC’s recommendation that we limit personal contact.”


Lyons は「握手をしないで申し訳ありませんが、人との接触を制限するというCDCの勧告に従っているのです」と言ってみることを勧めています。





◆establishment　　施設、店舗


杉田先生：
McMillan が言っていましたね
Many establishments now prominently post rules mandating face masks and hand sanitizer.
「今では多くの店舗が、マスクの着用と手指消毒剤の使用を義務付ける規則を目立つように掲示しています」





◆prominently　　目立つように


Heather さん：
In an easily noticed way.
His diplomas are prominently displayed in his office.
The statue is prominently featured in the middle of the town square.

　★diploma　「卒業証書」の意味だが、ここでは「資格免許状」

気づかれやすい方法で。
彼がこれまで取得した資格免許状は、目立つようにオフィスに飾られている。
その彫像は、町の広場の真ん中に目立つように立っている。





◆mandate　　命じる、義務付ける


Heather さん：
Require or make mandatory to use the adjective.
Our company mandates a yearly physical for all employees, for example.
Or a yearly physical is mandatory at our company.


require「命ずる」こと、または、この動詞の形容詞を使って make mandatory「義務づける」とも言います。
例えば、わが社では年に1回の健康診断を全従業員に義務づけている。
または、年に1回の健康診断が我が社では義務づけられている。
