◆frontline hero　　前線のヒーロー


Heather さん：
Frontline refers to someone directly involves with providing a service or making a product.
We also say people are on the front line or on the front lines, and very often there’s a nuance of doing something that requires hard work or there’s a battle of some kind involved.
“This hospital is on the front line of cancer research”, for example.
Or they work on the front lines of fighting poverty.


frontline とは、サービスを提供したり、製品を作ったりすることに直接従事している人をさします。
また、「第一線にいる」と言う場合、単数形の on the front line または複数形の on the frontlines を用いて表現します。それと、困難がつきものの仕事を行なっている、または、なんらかの戦いに参加している、といったニュアンスを伴うことが非常に多いです。
例えば「この病院は、がん研究の最前線にある」
または「彼らは、貧困との戦いの第一線にいる」など。





◆healthcare professional　　医療従事者、医療の専門家


Heather さん：
People who provide healthcare as their job, that’s what they do, professional.
Medical professional is also a very common term.


自分の仕事として健康管理や医療サービスを行なう人のこと。それが彼らの仕事であり、彼らはその仕事のプロだ、ということ。
medical professional という言葉も、よく使われています。





◆unsung　[ ʌnsʌ́ŋ ]
　称賛されていない、世に知られていない


Heather さん：
The voice, like the image behind this word, ah, it evokes, you know, a person who is not remembered in heroic ballads and such.
It means not praised, admired or known, despite deserving to be praised, admired and known.
Like, moms and dads are often unsung heroes, you know, they do a lot for their kids every day, day after day, and well, often their kids and the world take that for granted.

　　2. （反応・反響などを）引き起こす

この単語の裏にある意味からイメージされるように、この unsung という言葉は、英雄を褒めたたえる物語詩などでも歌にされることなく人の心の中に残らないような人を連想させますね。
これは、褒めたたえられ、称賛され、世に知られるに値することなのに、褒められない、称賛されない、知られることのない、という意味です。
例えば、世のお父さん・お母さんは、報われることのない影のヒーローですね。毎日毎日、来る日も来る日も、自分の子供のためにいろいろと頑張っているのに、子供たちや世間は、そんなことは親なら当然のことだと思っているふしがありますね。


杉田先生：
unsung heroes 知らぜらる英雄、陰のヒーローのことですね。
unsung と並んでよく使われるのは、unthanked ですね。「感謝されない」という意味です。


Heather さん：
We also say something is a thankless job.
It’s a hard job, a difficult job and no one appreciates, ah, the effort involved.


Something is a thankless job. （人に感謝されることのない仕事）という言い方もしますね。
きつい仕事、難しい仕事なのに、その苦労を誰も感謝してくれない、ということ。





◆essential worker　　エッセンシャルワーカー
　医療、エネルギー、物流、通信、公共交通機関、公共サービスなど、
　社会を維持するために欠くことが出来ない分野の仕事に従事する人


Heather さん：
People whose jobs are essential to the functioning of society, to the preservation of society.
Garbage collectors, for example, definitely essential workers,
If they didn’t regularly pick up the trash, we’d be living in a very smelly, unsanitary environment real quick.
Likewise, the people who maintain our cities, ？？？ systems, water systems.


社会を適度に機能させたり、社会を維持したりするのに欠くことのできない仕事をしている人のこと。
例えば、ゴミ収集作業員、絶対に必要不可欠な職業ですね。
もし、彼らが定期的にゴミを回収してくれなかったら、私たちの生活空間は、すぐにでも悪臭を放つ不衛生な環境になるでしょうね。
同じように、？？？や上下水道システムなど、私たちの住む都市をメンテナンスする人たちもいないと困りますよね。





◆grocery store clerk　　食料品店の店員

◆delivery driver　　配送の運転手


Heather さん：
You probably noticed that this term like others in the vignette is gender-neutral.
In past years, a lot of these would’ve been something-man, mailman, deliveryman.

　★would have done　（もし～であれば）・・・だっただろうに

視聴者の皆さんはお気づきのことと思いますが、この単語は、今回のビニエットに出てきている他の単語と同じように、性別を感じさせない中性的な言葉です。
ここ数年間で、こういった言葉の多くは変化してきました。以前であれば、モノのあとに-man をつけて mailman（郵便配達人）、deliveryman（配達人）と言っていたでしょうね。





◆mail carrier　　郵便配達人


杉田先生：
この言葉もそうですね。ジェンダーに関係なく carrier という言葉を使うのが一般的ですね。





◆put one’s life at risk　　自分の命を危険に晒す


Heather さん：
Risk being killed, put oneself in danger being killed.
Coast guard rescue people, do that, you know, they put their own lives at risk to rescue people in trouble on the sea.
Or people who drink and drive put their own lives and other people’s lives at risk.


命を落とす危険、死ぬかもしれない危険の中に自ら飛び込むこと。
沿岸警備隊はそうやって人命救助をしますね。彼らは自らの命を危険に晒しながら、海で遭難した人たちを助けます。
また、飲酒運転をする人たちは、自分の命だけでなく他者の命も危険に晒します。


杉田先生：
be at risk of ～ と言えば、「～の危険性がある」ということですね。
